If we do not slow down, we will face catastrophic consequences in the immediate future. I don’t normally tweet about this, but I sincerely believe this is the most important and serious problem of our time. This is not a joke
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

github pull requests are a fucking nightmare, they need to abolish these yesterday and replace them with gerrit-style change reviews, the horrors never end, they never end, they never end, history becomes worthless, the review process is painfully disorganised, it must Die

if you have only used github pull requests then i'm sorry but you have never seen how software development can be good

Some day I'll sit down with my kids and explain, "On the internet, sometimes you’ll come across weirdos who invite you out to events filled with strangers. It's important that you go to these. Chance meetings with internet weirdos is the way to get ahead in the world."

if the purpose of a system is what it does then the purpose of github dot com is to make git commit history useless

Who do we need to talk to help fund cache.nixos.org to preserve the whole history of software for the last 10+ years? Storage and bandwidth costs are reaching 15k USD per month. Please RT for reach 🙏

If anyone thought that the EU legislation on content scanning would be limited, you can forget about that. Europol has demanded unfiltered access to all data produced by these systems. balkaninsight.com/2023/09/29…

when people talk about the importance of pervasive financial surveillance for preventing money laundering, know that this is the kind of activity they are talking about
Replying to @syntropian
Imagine catching a money laundering charge for sending someone 27 bucks for some shit from Home Depot

take a moment to consider the broad (and absurd) implications of “writing software that is used in a bad way makes the author legally responsible for every bad use” would mean no Signal. no privacy tools. total handover of power to centralized orgs and illegalization of privacy

Also: this isn’t really about encryption. The problem is that (since about 2011) we digitized every social interaction and moved it into smartphones & cloud servers. The advent of AI means that data is now completely exploitable. Encryption is just one way to put the genie back.

I remember when Apple proposed their CSAM scanning system in 2021, there were a lot of people complaining about the “slippery slope fallacy” and how we couldn’t just assume that content scanning would be expanded to other purposes. 23 months later: therecord.media/senate-dea-b…

you can’t have different answers to “what would you die for” and “how do you spend your time” because they’re the same question

unfortunately i was one of the team members laid off today as part of this restructuring; i’ll be looking for work soon, DM me if you have any interesting leads!
Replying to @zodl_co
Still, this restructure was a difficult decision. It required that we lay off 13 employees — about half of our team. Many of the people we let go today were instrumental in bringing to market groundbreaking technologies and ideas that no other team in the world has been able to deliver, and we are forever grateful. 🙏❤️🛡️

Anyway one of the things I’m desperate to convey to people is that this is not just a continuation of the same fight we’ve been having for decades. The circumstances have entirely changed, and they’ll never change back. The folks leading this charge know that.

If you had the most cynical view of humanity, you’d expect government agencies to be making a *huge* push to end encryption right now; or at least adorn it with mass-scanning infrastructure. And sure enough, that’s exactly what we’re seeing. globalencryption.org/2023/04…

Many policy folks seem confused about the popularity of end-to-end encrypted messaging, like we all decided to become anarchists or something. Yet the entire basis of our communications infrastructure shifted in a direction that’s inimical to privacy; encryption fixes this.

It is remarkable to think that only in the past 15-20 years have we moved most of our private communications to digital channels with centralized storage & the processing power to perform bulk scanning. Coincidentally that’s nearly as long as encrypted messaging has been around.

A permanent lesson I will take with me from 2020/21 is that stale unfiltered air is like eating from the pavement. HEPA filters at home/the office, masks in airports/stores, dining preferably outdoors. Regrettably, most of my peers seem to have learned to hand sanitize instead.
