The McRib is mostly pork shoulder pressed into the shape of ribs. Lopez Foods, one of McDonald's McRib suppliers, said in 2014 that boneless pork picnic, the lower part of the shoulder, is the main ingredient. The pork is ground, shaped in a mold and frozen.
A proposed class action filed in federal court in Chicago in December 2025 says the McRib doesn't contain any pork rib meat. It alleges the patty is ground from lower-grade pork products such as pork shoulder, heart, tripe and scalded stomach. The complaint cites a food blog and a 2011 Chicago Magazine post that cited a meat scientist on restructured meat in general. McDonald's says the McRib is made with 100% pork and the patty has no hearts, tripe or scalded stomach. On Oct 30 a federal judge let the fraud, consumer deception and unjust enrichment claims go forward.
The patty is pork, water, salt, dextrose and rosemary extract. Salt pulls protein out of the ground pork and makes it sticky, and when the patty cooks that protein sets and holds the pieces together, the same way sausage does. Rosemary extract is an antioxidant, so the fat is slower to go rancid in the freezer. In 2014 the patty used BHA, propyl gallate and citric acid instead.
The sauce is water first and high fructose corn syrup second, ahead of the tomato paste. Molasses is fifth and sugar is ninth, so the sauce has 3 sweeteners. Caramel color and beet powder are added for color.
The pickles are firmed with calcium chloride and alum. The sandwich is 520 calories with 890 mg of sodium, 39% of the daily value, and 11 g of added sugar.

IHOP's omelettes have pancake batter in them.
The omelettes are marked as containing wheat and gluten because they're "made with a splash of Buttermilk Pancake batter to create a light, fluffy Omelette." The same batter goes into IHOP's burritos, tacos, savory crepes and the Jr. Breakfast Quesadilla. The scrambled eggs don't have it.
The word batter doesn't appear in the omelette section of IHOP's online menu. On that page it shows up for the French toast and the battered fish. An IHOP omelette is eggs, fillings and a splash of the same buttermilk batter that goes on the griddle for pancakes.
This might keep the kids up on Halloween.
An 8 oz bag of Sour Patch Kids is 192 g of sugar. The bag weighs 227 g.
The label reads sugar, invert sugar, corn syrup and modified corn starch, then under 2% of tartaric acid, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, Yellow 6, Red 40, Yellow 5 and Blue 1. The first 3 ingredients are sugar in 3 forms. Invert sugar is table sugar split into glucose and fructose so it stays soft and doesn't crystallize, and corn syrup does the same thing from the other direction. The starch is what makes it a gummy instead of a syrup.
The sour is the under 2%. FDA's listing for tartaric acid describes it as a byproduct of wine manufacturing, the crust that forms inside wine tanks, scraped out, purified and ground to a powder. Most of the world's supply still comes from wineries. The rest, mostly made in China since the late 1990s, starts from maleic anhydride, a petrochemical, and a bacterial enzyme turns it into tartaric acid. Citric acid is the one grown on a mold. Both acids are in the sugar coating on the outside of the candy, which is why the bag says sour then sweet.

Members wore red at the company awards ceremony this week to show pride in our colleagues’ work. Do leaders share that pride? AP execs are undercutting our journalism while honoring the best of our journalists.
We call for a reinstatement of our expert photo and video producers.

Reese's Pieces have no chocolate in them. The peanuts had their oil pressed out and a cheaper fat put back in.
Sugar is first, then partially defatted peanuts, then hydrogenated palm kernel and soybean oil, then corn syrup solids. Everything after that is 2% or less, and it's the dyes, the glaze, some vanillin and a little milk. There's no cocoa anywhere.
Partially defatted just means the peanuts went through a press. The peanut oil comes out one side and gets sold as peanut oil. What's left is a dry peanut flour, and that's what the center is made from, because flour holds a shape in a panning drum and doesn't go rancid. Then they put fat back in, and the fat they picked is hydrogenated palm kernel oil, which is solid at room temperature and costs less than peanut oil. You can see the swap on the panel. 38 pieces have 6 g of fat and all 6 are saturated. Peanut oil is mostly unsaturated, so that number isn't the peanut.
The shell is sugar with 4 dyes and a coat of shellac.

I could only muster the half. The chocolate milk was worth it.

Some pretty pointed comments from Sonny Gray about when he was pulled. Very emotional.
Made a point to highlight how good he's been the 3rd time through the order.
I'm always learning.
Slim Jim is made with mechanically separated chicken. The ingredients are beef, pork, mechanically separated chicken, water and textured soy flour, then corn syrup and salt.
Mechanically separated chicken is what's left on the bones after the meat has been cut off. The bones are pushed through a sieve under high pressure, and the meat still stuck to them comes out as a smooth paste. USDA allows it, but it has to be listed by that name. The textured soy flour stretches the meat and holds water.

Replying to @USATODAY
@USATODAY is cutting resources from newsrooms like @detroitnews while expecting more from us. They still refuse to agree to a fair contract.
It's time for the company to agree to a fair contract and show they actually value journalists, not just shareholders.
Not a typical line in a newspaper campaign endorsement. "She is mentally stable, and in this race, that's enough to get our endorsement," @DetNewsOpinion says in Michigan's 8th congressional district.

My family is in a worse financial position since @usatoday bought @detroitnews because of increased health insurance costs.
We are back at the bargaining table today. Time for USAT to show they value journalists - not just shareholders - by agreeing to a fair contract.

@FOX2News Mike Rogers held a campaign event today in Macomb County. We attended, and our reporter, Scott Wolcheck, was not called on during the Q&A. This is what happened when we tried to talk to his media team about getting one-on-one time with Rogers. Multiple FOX 2 reporters and anchors have tried to get in touch with Rogers and his campaign, but time with the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate has not been made available.
