What’s the effect of rising government debt on risk sharing and asset prices? Filippo has an answer. He is on the job market. Have a look!
Replying to @UChi_Economics
Government debt insures households if repaid through progressive taxation. Rising debt levels alter future taxes, and thus household risks. This shifts demand for risky and safe assets, impacting bond prices. Read more: economics.uchicago.edu/direc… #UChicago #EconJobMarket

In equilibrium, I may only need to submit my scratch notes to journals. Lovely!
I've pretty much stopped reading papers now; I just throw them in ChatGPT and ask ChatGPT wtf the paper is talking about

Creativity, technical skills, work patterns, etc.: all of these weaknesses, for PhD students, are fixable. The only issue that can't be fixed is interest. If you aren't at least moderately interested in what you're studying, it's not that easy for academia to work out for you

In a community of asymmetrically informed (& perhaps non-Bayesian) researchers, which findings deserve the "A journal status" more? A) Those most surprising to the best-informed researchers (shifting frontiers). B) Those that move the average belief the most (largest impact).

So @QuentinVandewe2 and I are looking for a predoc! We're mainly looking for someone to help with theory/structural tasks, so there is no data task, and the work will lean towards theory stuff. Students, come apply! Faculty, send us your best students!

Big finding! It seems markets are too far from being “complete”, a fundamental assumption in classical asset pricing models.
Using new household-level portfolio data including over 400 billionaires finds risk transfer (how much risk changes hands) is small: 0.65 percent per quarter. Standard models, however, predict 10 times more. A new model with inelastic demand provides reconciliation, from @xgabaix, @rkoijen, Federico Mainardi, @plausiblyexog, and @motoyogo nber.org/papers/w33336

Corollary: A risk-averse student (i.e., with a concave util over professors’ actions) never meet professors.
How to email your professor: 1. Find your prof’s email address and prior belief. 2. Compute your utility as a function of prof’s posterior belief. 3. Concavify. 4. Profit.

N people have to meet at T, and you're the organizer. You'll pay $1 for any min of delay. The attendees are busy, and irrationally believe that they'll be on time. But you expect some to be late by 5min. The meeting starts as soon as N-1 people join. When do you set the meeting?

Research projects take a long time, and it's unclear if the topic is still popular at the time of publication. A betting market on future citations can solve this prob. If researchers expect area A to gain popularity, it'll show up in the betting prices of the top papers in A.

Great advice! Most JM/career tips are zero-sum, so it's good to highlight positive-sum tips like this.
Grad students: couldn’t disagree with this more. Other grad students are your future colleagues/coauthors— it’s great to bond with them! For sure don’t be shy about approaching faculty, but if you do, definitely don’t get the tab.
