This is exactly how the elites see the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. Because they are wealthy, they are shielded from the reality of rising living costs. They don’t worry about fuel prices, check price tags when shopping or think twice before paying for basic necessities. Inflation barely changes their lifestyle. Privilege gives you a different perspective on life. When you’ve never had to struggle for basic comfort, you start seeing other people’s desire for a decent quality of life as entitlement or living above their means. Sometimes, privilege makes people blind to the realities others face, and you see this in some of the insensitive things they say. Nigeria is a low-income country where the cost of living is ridiculously high compared to what the average person earns. The problem isn’t that people want too much. It’s that their income can no longer afford them a decent standard of living.
