Okay, so.... I think we've been watching #TheXFiles "My Struggle" episodes wrong. At least I have been. The implications are leaving me both more and less frustrated, with MSIV especially. 1/

So I do think that there's a strain of this kind of shallow oversimplification in some neurodiversity discourse. But like, are we dismissing the idea that autism *is* a disability??? That many everyday human things *are* harder for us..?
So much damage is done by the idea that there is a majority of people for whom life is straightforward. The world was designed for them, they effortlessly comply with societal demands and get over their life stresses easily. They never wonder whether there is something different about them, or criticise themselves for minor failings. They sail through school and work. They have meaningful relationships with only transient conflict. Their emotions are manageable and in proportion. They are round pegs in round holes. The neurotypical Some people look like this from the outside. Hardly anyone reports being like this from the inside. Yet more and more books and training programmes promote the idea that if you’re not like this, you must be neurodivergent. Wired differently. We have pathologised the human condition.

Like I get the impression that Naomi doesn't like the idea of conditions like autism being "identities." But this makes it seem like she doesn't even like the idea of them being considered disabilities, or understand why something like autism is a disability...

...and that things might be pervasively harder for people who have, well, a pervasive developmental disability, than for people who do not.

Right, so, this is exactly what we've been *trying* to tell you. "Neurodivergent" does not and was not intended to replace individual clinical diagnoses. It's a big umbrella and we're not all gonna have the same or even similar needs...
I was writing a training day on adapting therapy for neurodivergent clients when I got stuck. The task was impossible, because neurodivergence is a category which can include gifted people, severely disabled people, people with serious mental health problems and anyone who feels that the world was not designed for them. Which is, in my experience, almost everyone. Because who out there feels that the world IS designed for them? I could think of no adaptation which would apply to all these people, but wasn’t just best practice for everyone. The term neurodivergence is so wide that it means nothing. It flattens important differences. And yet it’s all around us. Why?

Even autistic people alone can have conflicting access needs among ourselves, and while I could give some broad suggestions, and it would help to understand autism in order to tailor therapy practices for specific clients, it's going to be very hard...

...to adapt therapy for autistic people as a group. Let alone for neurodivergent people as a group. B/c "neurodivergent" is a community designation, not a clinical one. And if you haven't understood that by now, maybe you don't have any business writing a training like this.

If that discrepancy isn't enough for Scully to want to do a whole autopsy.... #tbtXFiles

Should we add a "drink" for "Mulder schedules Scully an autopsy without telling her?" 😂 #tbtXFiles
