Climate change is not merely an environmental concern; it is a public health challenge that requires urgent and coordinated action. On 21 October 2026, I participated in an engagement with Members of Parliament on Uganda’s Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP) 2025–2030, focusing on Parliament’s role in strengthening the health sector’s preparedness and response to climate related risks. Speaking on behalf of the Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Climate Change, I emphasised the need to move beyond discussions and ensure that the Plan is adequately funded, effectively implemented and subject to meaningful parliamentary oversight. I also called for stronger collaboration between the Parliamentary Committees on Health and Climate Change, including coordinated oversight visits, regular progress reviews and clear accountability for implementation. From floods and landslides in the Elgon sub-region to droughts and climate-sensitive disease outbreaks, the effects of climate change underscore the need to build a resilient health system that protects every Ugandan, particularly the most vulnerable. I thank the Ministry of Health, the Parliamentary Forum on Climate Change Uganda and our development partners for facilitating this important engagement. Our success must be measured not by the meetings we hold, but by the lives we protect and the resilience of our communities. Cc @obothoboth

Uganda needs 260 million trees every year to supply charcoal to 2 million households. This is a serious sustainability challenge.

Cooking with charcoal and firewood exposes families to harmful air pollution, including PM2.5 and PM10, increasing the risk of respiratory and other diseases over time. Uganda must gradually transition to cleaner, affordable cooking energy to protect lives and our environment.

Climate finance is where theory meets practice. The real challenge? Designing instruments that actually mobilize capital. Smart focus areas.
