I’ve had a number of conversations with folks inside and outside government about the current situation with Anthropic, and here is what I believe to be true: — As we know, Anthropic publicly released its Mythos class models earlier this week under the commercial name Fable. — Fable is Mythos with guardrails. But if those guardrails fail, then you’ve exposed Mythos and its advanced cyber capabilities to people who shouldn’t have them. (Keep in mind that Anthropic itself widely promoted the idea that Mythos was a cyberweapon and needed to be regulated as such. They asked for government regulation of Mythos and championed the guardrails on Fable. If there is a vulnerability — big or small — it is Anthropic’s responsibility to patch.) — A highly credible trusted partner of both Anthropic and the USG who was testing Fable came forward with a jailbreak of those guardrails. The Admin asked Dario to fix the jailbreak or de-deploy the model. Dario refused. — In their blog post, Anthropic defended its decision by saying the jailbreak isn’t serious. That is not what the trusted partner and the USG believe; nor is that kind of minimizing language consistent with Anthropic’s brand as the AI safety company. It’s difficult to fathom how they could claim a jailbreak allowing operability of a cyber weapon could be defined as not “serious.” — In the past, Anthropic has always said that safety must be top priority and taken super seriously. In this case, Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the consumer model over safety. — In reaction, the Admin issued the export control. The Admin did this reluctantly. It’s been very surprised that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to cooperate with a reasonable safety request (ie fixing the jailbreak issue). Anthropic’s reaction is very much at odds with their branding and ethos as a safe AI research community. — The Admin’s hope now is that Anthropic remediates the safety issue, the export control is lifted, and Fable goes back into general release. The Admin wants all of this to happen as soon as possible. It is frankly bewildered that Anthropic hasn’t wanted to comply with safety requests that it previously said were its highest priority. — Those trying to misdirect and tie this action to the prior DoW/Anthropic issues are wrong. The Admin values Anthropic’s technical capabilities and feels that this issue, while serious, should be easily resolved. The ball is in Anthropic’s court.

Breaking: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy was among the tech leaders who raised concerns to senior Trump officials this week re: security risks in Anthropic's newest models. Those convos set in motion the government's new export controls on foreign national access to Mythos and Fable.

Proud to have been selected for the @USNavy Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (MUSV) Marketplace at-sea demonstration. As the Navy advances towards realizing the vision of a Golden Fleet, autonomous systems will be critical to extending reach, increasing capacity, and delivering maritime capability at scale. Our Marauder MUSV has already begun on-water trials, and we look forward to showcasing the mission-ready capabilities that autonomous systems can deliver to the fleet. Today, @Saronic announced its $1.75B Series D, at a $9.25B valuation. Four years ago, @JTlonsdale, Alex Moore, and the 8VC team were exploring a new defense prime. Across the Hill and Pentagon, our DC partners were sounding alarms about America’s maritime future. We enlisted remarkable leaders, headlined by @MavrookasD (frmr Navy Seal) and @Vbob202 (frmr 8VC Fellow/Anduril), and we started building. The result was Saronic.  Hundreds of vessels and 1000+ crew members later, the shipyards are humming, and the age of naval autonomy is underway.

At this point the entire Iranian leadership is just three Mossad agents who don’t know about each other, so they keep on playing the game. (Joke from Israel just now)

Los Angeles is having a moment. Biggest opportunity in startups / venture I’ve seen in 10 years. 40% of all dollars invested in US in space are in LA. And it has extended to hard tech more broadly. #LongLA

So, here's what happened at OpenAI tonight. Mira planned to hire Sam and Greg back. She turned Team Sam over past couple of days. Idea was to force board to fire everyone, which they figured the board would not do. Board went into total silence. Found their own CEO Emmett Shear

my favorite World of DaaS episode ever just dropped: with Peter Thiel I promise you that you will not be able to learn more in an hour (or 30 min if you do it at 2x). we get DEEP on investing, scientific stagnation, AI, culture, tech start-ups, and more. Peter has been a friend, boss, and mentor for over 20 years. He was the first investor in LiveRamp and is an investor in SafeGraph. And prior to LiveRamp, I worked for him for 3 years. Here are some snippets of my favorite parts of the conversation: * Are we overrating LLMs? How does it compare to other breakthrough technologies like the Internet? * Over the last 25 years, there have been 17 $100bn companies - all in the US and China. Why hasn’t Europe broken through? * Being the reserve currency in the world may unintuitively lead to the U.S. demise? * Software has been a gravity for global talent and resources - is that the cause of a lack of progress of atoms or is it something else? * We cover a lot more In a wide ranging conversation spanning public policy, venture capital, and AI.
