I was always a big proponent of being more aggressive at 1st base with 2 outs and 2 strikes. Especially early in the game. I liked this situation to try to steal because if: 1. If I'm safe, the hitter has an RBI situation instead of just a runner at 1st. 2. If I'm out, the batter gets a fresh count to start the next inning. 1-2 count with a runner at 1st and 2 outs vs 0-0 count to lead off an inning against a pitcher that has already fired at least 2 game-speed pitches. 3. If the catcher throws it away, I'm at 3rd, and pressure on the defense is elevated. Arguably every outcome is better than having a runner at 1st with 2 outs and 2 strikes. Plus you (and the hitter) get an in-game rep and gain valuable information on the battery. I'm not saying to run into an out recklessly. But whatever hesitancy you had about running before that 2 strike count with 2 outs, turn the aggression up a notch. Thanks for reading!

I often ask hitters, "What's your approach?" 90% of the time, the response I get is, "I'm trying to hit something hard." In my opinion, this approach stops short of being effective. It's basically not having an approach at all. Of course we want to hit the ball hard, but without direction, location or result in mind, the stroke will be lacking intent and conviction. I challenge you (as a hitter) to add one element to your approach. "I'm trying to hit something hard (on a line to right-centerfield)." Especially in practice and/or low consequence settings. That added element gives you a visual of the result. You're immediately given much more information with this simple addition. A line drive to right field is a different stroke and point of contact than a line drive to left field. A hard-hit ground ball is a different swing than a 3-0 hack. You subconsciously know what pitch location you can handle, how to attack, and direction of intent. An approach of, "I'm trying to hit something hard," leaves so much to decipher while the pitch is on the way. The swing often turns into a reactionary act, or defensive leaning, as opposed to the offensive, hunter mindset. If this resonates with you, make it your own. If it doesn't thanks for your consideration. Say it. See it. Hunt it. Do it.

8 runs scored because of Christian Yelich's baserunning to 2nd base. If his route to 2nd is 2.4 inches longer, this 10-0 game is still 2-0 and going into the next inning. Game of inches. Don't give away inches.
Being in the 1st base coach's box gives me a great view of how inefficient some leads are. It's a game of inches. Taking a lead off the back edge is one thing... but taking it off 2 feet behind the baseline is just not going to cut it when you're out by a half step. 2 feet behind the baseline means the same lead (let's say 10 feet off the base) is 2.4 inches farther from the base than the one in the baseline. I'll restate the baseball wisdom again... It's a game of inches. "But what if I'm not trying to steal?" -Honest rebuttal Well, when your teammate hits that groundball to the Shortstop's right and throws to the covering 2nd baseman at 2nd, that 2.4 inches means A LOT. Instead of being a big (little) play, it's an out. But it's okay because you weren't trying to steal, right? Attention to detail is the name of the game. Don't forget the details. Straight lines are quicker than longer straight lines. Also, if you ARE trying to steal, taking a lead closer to the baseline makes your lead look shorter to the pitcher. Be a better baserunner immediately with this one adjustment. Take your lead in the baseline at 1st! Thank you as always!
