IMPORTANT: This ranks a bunch of ways we get around cities, using average carbon emissions by transport type in grams per pkm. It breaks emissions down by operation, manufacture etc. Feet & bikes win. Lots of ways beat electric cars, & everything beats gas cars. HT @copenhenken

Startling polling from @Unherd, on the eve of the 3rd anniversary of Brexit. In all 650 UK constituencies apart from three (all in Lincolnshire), more people now agree than disagree that Brexit was a mistake. Biggest movement in left leaning areas. britain.unherd.com/?mc_cid=a…

When we see streets as primarily space to move cars, we miss out on the wonderful places for people that streets can be. And our cities are less successful for it. Rotenturmstraße’s before-&-after transformation in #Vienna via former Deputy Mayor @BirgitHebein. #StreetsForPeople

Let me summon the ghost of Parler here as well: they were booted off of AWS for *not having an effective abuse management process.* Irrevocably break Twitter's content moderation, and the cloud providers will reduce your bill to $0 for you.

WATCH: The most amazing thing about this remarkable car commercial, is that it didn’t seem to realize, or didn’t care, how effectively it made the point that cars are a HUGE waste of space in cities. Award-winning 2002 ad for Saturn cars. HT @javiermalagon

My guess is that Apple flipped on some stuff related to iPhone 14 in iOS 16 beta 6 that's hard to extricate for a simulator runtime release, which is why they have left iOS 16 beta 5 (and its wallpaper-related performance issue) as the sim runtime in the external Xcode beta.

And just like that, Meta have lost at least one developer ever working for them (the developer is me) If you're a dev / tech talent and considering employment options, I would urge you to include "Am I actively supporting a fascist regime" on your list of variables.

We can get URLs for system folders in iOS 16 directly from static properties on URL type: URL.documentsDirectory, URL.cachesDirectory etc. No need to call FileManager.default.url(for:) method any more for common use cases. nilcoalescing.com/blog/GetUR…

The original iPhone didn’t have cut/copy/paste. Infamous! The quickest explanation is that I didn’t have time to do it right. I had too much keyboard, autocorrection, and text system work to do. The design team didn’t have time either. So we passed on the feature for 1.0.

The curvature of your fingers makes you think you’re touching higher up the the screen than you are. So, touches are warped to account for this. That’s why—to this day—it’s hard to target taps when you hold your phone upside down.

I missed this bit but you can actually render a (vector) PDF out of SwiftUI views now in iOS 16. That's going to be incredibly useful for our book. It's even well documented in the ImageRenderer docs (I don't know if it's online but it is in the Xcode beta).
