Two framing failures here:
Republicans deliberately let Obamacare subsidies lapse knowing this outcome would happen, but that reality makes the GOP look very bad so itβs omitted from the headline. The increases are just happening, without context of the deliberate policy drivers.
The increases will be felt hardest among middle class Americans, but the impact is framed first in political terms as a βblow to Obamacare,β emphasizing politics over policy impact to the American people.
The substance of the reporting by @ReedAbelson @sangerkatz is fair and clear, but editorial chose a headline that could very easily mislead the reader into thinking the program is just unworkable when deliberate Republican policy is weakening it.
Itβs not just the @nytimes this is very common everywhere
