<These rules & principles require criminal laws to be sufficiently precise that they are accessible and foreseeable, so that citizens can regulate their conduct and predict whether they are acting lawfully or not. Without that, the potential for a chilling effect is obvious.

If nothing else, the divergence of opinion about what conduct the Conversion Practices Bill would & wouldn't criminalise shows its incompatibility with Art 7 ECHR (no punishment without law), the common law principle of legal certainty & the rule against doubtful penalisation>

This was from back in June on the Conversion Practices Bill. There was only a handful of us raising concerns. I remember being staggered at the time how clear it was that the Minister hadn’t read or understood her own bill. And she didn’t even attempt to answer the question on whether a parent withholding consent for a child to participate in the puberty blocker trial could be at risk of 5 years in prison. This Minister is now the Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee.

Sex work is work that many women, and men, willingly choose. Politicians should work to enact laws to protect those who are being exploited however they should not over reach into impacting bodily autonomy by claiming all sex work is not true consent. Just objectively untrue.
