In 1978, five friends disappeared after driving home from a basketball game in Chico, California. Their abandoned car and the remains of several of the men were later found more than 70 miles away in the mountains. Investigators discovered evidence suggesting that at least two of the men survived for months in a remote wilderness trailer before dying. The case became known as the Yuba County Five mystery. One of the group, Gary Mathias, was never found, and his fate remains unknown. historydefined.net/yuba-coun…

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, and while Xin Zhui was certainly a beautiful woman during her life, most wouldn’t consider her to be so 2,100 years later. But for a certain group of scientists and researchers, the mummy of Xin Zhui would be one of the more incredible, if not beautiful, things that have ever been discovered from the Han Dynasty. A noblewoman in life, Xin Zhui died young, at around 50, but she had a second life that would rival her first in importance. Her mummy was so lifelike that it shocked discoverers. With soft skin, raven hair, and blood still in her veins, Xin Zhui is one of the most well-preserved mummies ever discovered. What was the life of a noblewoman like Xin Zhui like, and how exactly was her mummy so perfectly preserved? historydefined.net/xin-zhui/

The Conjuring was inspired by the reported haunting of the Perron family in Rhode Island and the investigations of paranormal researchers Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren. Although the film presents its villain as a historical witch named Bathsheba, many of its central claims are fictional or unsupported by historical evidence. In the film, Bathsheba is portrayed as a satanic witch who sacrificed her child, hanged herself, and returned as a demonic spirit that possesses members of the Perron family. The movie depicts the Warrens defeating the evil through an exorcism after a series of terrifying supernatural events. The character was loosely inspired by Bathsheba Sherman, who lived near Harrisville, Rhode Island, during the 19th century. Local folklore later portrayed her as a witch, but historical records do not support claims that she murdered children, practiced satanism, or died by suicide. Records show that Bathsheba Sherman was born in 1812, belonged to her local Baptist church, and died in 1885 from what was likely a stroke. While several of her children died young, infant mortality was common during the period, and no evidence links their deaths to criminal acts. The Perron family moved into the Harrisville farmhouse in 1971 and later sought help from the Warrens after reporting unexplained experiences. Their investigation helped popularize the legend of Bathsheba Sherman, eventually leading to the story that inspired The Conjuring decades later. historydefined.net/bathesheb…

On March 6, 1995, Scott Amedure appeared on The Jenny Jones Show to reveal a “secret crush” on his friend Jonathan Schmitz, a moment designed for shock and ratings. Schmitz appeared embarrassed but outwardly calm on stage. Three days later, Amedure was dead, shot twice in the chest outside his Michigan home. Amedure had lived a largely ordinary life before the show. A former Army serviceman, he worked in telecommunications and bartending and was known as a generous, openly gay man who supported friends suffering from HIV at a time of widespread stigma. His decision to appear on daytime television would permanently alter that life, placing a deeply personal revelation into a public, highly charged setting. After the taping, Amedure reportedly left a flirtatious note in Schmitz’s mailbox. When the two later confronted each other, Schmitz retrieved a shotgun from his car and killed Amedure at close range, later calling 911 to confess. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 1996, briefly had the verdict overturned, then was reconvicted in 1999 and sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison before being released in 2017.
