Janus Films announced they’re putting Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN back in theaters in the spring. It’s the perfect excuse to reshare my piece for New York Times on the 20th anniversary. I talked to Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón, Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal, Maribel Verdú.

#backrooms and The Puffy Chair take place in the same universe @MarkDuplass
Having young directors like Curry Barker is inspiring. His first feature film already shows so much maturity and understanding of the horror genre, in a way that allows him to break expectations and dive deep into real ideas rather than settling for cheap jump scares. #obsession

Absurd and inhuman violence is spreading ferociously through the sacred places of the Christian East, profaned by the blasphemy of war and the brutality of business, with no regard for people’s lives, which are considered at most collateral damage of self-interest. But no gain can be worth the life of the weakest, children, or families. No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.
What would it take for @IMAX to open more theaters capable of projecting 70mm IMAX film?
I know very few films use the format, but seeing images like this makes me wish more people could experience it. It’s truly incomparable.
No context, but in #ProjectHailMary there’s a moment when everything goes from green to red and that small decision is the reason I go to the movies. Awesome work from the brilliant minds of @philiplord, @chrizmillr and everyone involved! See it in the biggest screen possible!

No best original score Oscar nomination for CHALLENGERS’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is ridiculous
Sing Sing getting snubbed for best picture and best performance by an actor in a supporting role is such a wasted opportunity. Say what you will about it, but it felt genuinely important and getting recognized would’ve placed it in more people’s radars. #Oscars

Silvia Pinal has died. One of the brightest most versatile stars in the history of Mexican cinema. Her work with Luis Buñuel in VIRIDIANA, THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL, SIMON OF THE DESERT stands indelible. What a career. Descanse en paz una de las más grandes del cine mexicano.

So for the theatrical experience to survive we need to tolerate people recording the screen so they can post entire scenes of a movie that just opened to social media? Absolutely bleak shit.

Oh, beauty! Look at that! The future of animation is NOT 100% industry-dependent. It's already here- the artists are already ahead of it- its a tragedy that those that run the production purses are blind and enthralled by the safety of looking back.
