A QUESTION OF FAIRNESS, JOURNALISM AND POLITICAL DEBATE IN NEWCASTLE We’ve been covering the protests and counter-protests in Newcastle, giving people on both sides what we call a ‘hot mic’ – an opportunity to put forward their views, unfiltered and in their own words. Our approach has always been straightforward: we want people to hear different perspectives, even when those opinions are completely opposed to one another. Too often, political debate descends into name-calling, with people labelled ‘looney left’, ‘far right’ or worse, rather than their actual arguments being addressed. Today, during our coverage, one individual described us as ‘racist bloggers’ to others in his group. We take accusations of racism seriously. It’s an extremely serious allegation, and one we don’t believe should be thrown around lightly. We approached him and asked him to explain what he meant and provide examples of why he believed that description was justified. Unfortunately, we didn’t get an explanation. We also noticed that he was encouraging others in the group not to speak to us. However, as our other videos from today demonstrate, we continued to offer people the opportunity to share their views, regardless of which side they supported. We want to make one thing clear: We have no interest in telling people what to think, deciding which side is right or shutting down opinions we disagree with. Our job is to give people an opportunity to speak and allow our audience to hear those views for themselves. We would genuinely like to invite the individual involved to sit down with us for an on-camera conversation. He is welcome to bring his own camera, and we’d be happy to have an open and honest discussion about his comments, our coverage and why he believes we deserve that description. We are happy to have difficult conversations, and we don’t expect everyone to agree with us. But we do believe serious accusations deserve an explanation. More footage from today’s Newcastle protests and counter-protests will be published shortly, including the exchanges between those attending. Different opinions are welcome. Debate is healthy.
