Anthropic: Teaching AI to Build Scientific Models. AI is moving beyond fitting data toward building scientific models. In a new research article, Anthropic explores how AI agents can: • Generate scientific equations and mechanistic hypotheses • Run simulations and refine models against experimental data • Explore multiple plausible explanations rather than a single best fit • Identify uncertainties and guide future experiments The bigger goal isn’t just better predictions. It’s scientific understanding. An important caveat: most current systems have been tested on rediscovering known models. Discovering genuinely new mechanisms remains an open challenge. 🔗 anthropic.com/research/teach… #AIforScience #ScientificDiscovery #Anthropic

New on our Science Blog: How AI is beginning to change scientific modeling. Scientific models help researchers explain and predict real-world systems—like how a single nerve cell fires, or what happens when neutron stars collide. Recent advances have transformed how scientists fit complex models to data. But scientists still typically write the models manually, and usually need to weigh up several competing versions, each of which might explain the data in a different way. In a guest post, Jakob Macke, Daniel Gedon, and Stefan Wahl describe how AI is starting to help with these parts of the process. By writing, running, fitting, and revising scientific models as code, AI can explore many possible model structures, and find out which explanations the data support. anthropic.com/research/teach…

Startups rely on Anthropic to offer the best AI capabilities to their own customers. But they’re often walking a tightrope, wary that the 800-pound gorilla will dictate the terms of million-dollar contracts and could cut into their market with competitive products.
