no, no, it's alright, i guess i just really thought we'd all spend these weeks without ao3 on finding new creative ways to show fic writers appreciation for their craft instead of inventing different discourse shitting on them every six hours, but it's cool, really

not to be a dick but this is VERBATIM what hoardes of fic writers say when anything (usually untargeted writing advice) makes them feel insecure about their writing. it sucks but we are the architects of this mindset. stop doing this. writing's hard. take pride in your shit.

yes. that is the Point.
I love an age gap fic but what I don't like is when the younger character is like 19 and the older one is 40. that's weird and predatory.

Every time an AO3-scraped site pops up and everyone starts issuing DMCAs or using the site’s forms to take their work down, I just rip my hair out. Do not ever do this. It is almost ALWAYS an attempt to prey on your emotions to get your email or other data. Report to OTW and let them handle it. OTW is on the case now, as it happens. Just breathe.

Alright so I have a question for those of us who want to post our fics on separate websites: What webhosts allow explicit written content? I don’t want to build a site through one and get my site banned because I specialize in the weird shit.

I’ll be reposting onto Ellipsus as we wait. My first kaeluc fic: Valse a Trois Temps Rated E, 15.3k words Original posting date: Feb 12?, 2021 A waltz in three beats. I wrote this in response to a long-deleted thread about Kaeya and Diluc coming to blows. Link below.

your MMC falls under one of two categories: "edgy fuck prince" or "wet". only when you understand which category he belongs to will you be able to successfully market your book

Multiple things can be true at once. Fic writers can: Want engagement from readers Write for love of the game Want their writing to take off so they get a book deal Write fic as a hobby Want to get paid/take commissions/table like artists do Happily share work for free But my GOD this hellsite is allergic to nuance. All of these are fine. One writer can embody ALL of them.

Anybody doing unofficial nanowrimo activities starting tomorrow? I’m thinking about doing it for the fest fic I’m working on, but kinda no fun to do it alone.

"fanwriters are classically not offered the same grace as fanartists" and "fanwriters and fanartists BOTH could stand to be a little less neurotic about work engagement" are not mutually exclusive statements.

Do Honey Nut Cheerios now taste like cigarette ashes to anybody else or is it just me? It’s like this for months.

idk, maybe it's because i lived through the livejournal/ffnet/wattpad/tumblr/etc censorship purges, but people downloading their favorites fics for personal archival and sharing them when the originals are inaccessible has always been a huge part of keeping fandom culture alive
am I too woke of a fic writer to be a little conflicted about fics being downloaded to personal drives without the author’s knowledge and shared/read without the author gaining any site engagment or is this something I should brush off and get over /gen

It's me, your friendly neighborhood editor, here to remind you that sometimes when you have the urge to write "suddenly" what you really want is a paragraph break.

Something Kaeluc to read if you’re suffering today.
THREADFIC: Flowers in Your Hair NSFW Kaeluc, reverse hanahaki with a…ridiculous twist, trope destruction. Please mute the conversation if uninterested! After returning from the Golden Apple Archipelago, Kaeya develops the strangest craving for flowers.

Seeing a lot of people upset that others have downloaded their work from AO3. Downloading is a basic function of the site. Any fic can be downloaded from the top of the page. If you’re uncomfortable with people downloading your work, you shouldn’t put it somewhere that allows it.

I know a lot of people are new to fandom, but the creation and sharing of aggregate fic archives is not new. This is a tried and true practice; this is just the first time you’re seeing it en mass. You see it a lot in older fandoms, it’s how many fandom classic works have survived purges and strikethroughs and archive 404s. If you want control, don’t post publicly. But you won’t get engagement. It’s a trade off (and not even one that is foolproof).

Most readers will never engage with you. Most people don’t comment or even leave kudos. One month of stats is not going to wreck you, be so serious.
