My favourite chart from the @IEA special report on electrification. Electricity is only 23% of Final Energy (No big deal), but it's 37% of Useful Energy (What?) and delivers 46% of GDP (Wow!) And it's going clean, fast. Still think there's no transition?

Everyone thinks AI will accelerate science. I think it will mostly accelerate disappointment.
Not because AI isn’t powerful, but because we’ve made this exact mistake before in the 1990's.
Let me tell you about it. 🧵1/

Over the past year, lots of people have asked me what I think of the argument Jean-Baptiste Fressoz makes in More and More and More - that sources of energy are only ever additive. TLDR: not much.

"Cour des Comptes estimates that EDF – already drowning in debt – will have to spend €460bn (£394bn) by 2040 to upgrade the nuclear park (le Grand Carénage), to bring the grid into the 21st century, and new reactors won’t be ready until the middle of the century. All of this is creeping into French electricity bills. France is now facing what Britain has already been dealing with for years: the upfront investment cost of a modern energy system. I struggle to enthuse over the £40bn Sizewell C nuclear project."

4 réacteurs par an. Boum.

All of the 21% rise in electricity demand was met with distributed solar - actually grid electricity fell 3% in the last 2 years...
