S2 really nailed villanelle's jealousy & especially her jealousy re: niko's relationship w eve — took insecurities hinted at in S1 & ripped them open, & i think its success in using that to frame her arc & develop her character is part of the reason why 208 is such a fantastic ep

save her from rejection when an incapacity for 'domestic/normal' is why she thought eve kept choosing niko over her. her actions weren't right but they were understable. I think S2's success in this —acknowledging small aspects of character established in prev seasons & then

expanding on them & using them to provide insight into internal states/conflicts/motivations — is where S4 failed miserably. Eve's behavior & characterization in S4 feel horrible for the same(opposite?) reasons that V's behavior & characterization in S2 feel so good

the stills of the arrow scene continue to be better than the way the scene was actually shot

S3 set a precedent for straying from villaneve as the narrative focus & while the characters weren't outright betrayed, they stagnated (esp eve). S4 meanwhile followed said precedent & while the characters moved forward (though v didn't really), they were betrayed in the process.

It's just a matter of picking your poison & deciding what you want to salvage. And imo preferring one thing over another is not grounds for a superiority complex when both things in question kind of suck

why did eve push v away all season? why was eve's animosity toward v never explained or justified? why did eve & v never share an honest conversation throughout S4? because the writers didn't give a fuck about their relationship.

the more time passes the more I think the people calling the shots during season 4 simply did not care about doing the story justice. didn't care about eve/v & didn't want to put any effort into exploring them. they were there to collect a paycheck on low passion and low budget.

and genuinely i think we give them too much credit trying to figure out character motives / their visions for the characters in general. it feels like at some point the vision became "let's get this shit over with". harsh maybe but that's just the way it comes off to me now
