Frankie Beverly and Maze is the original SLAB music in Houston. Back then they had a bunch of 6 x 9’s blasting Maze, coming down MLK. Hence the “on a Sunday night, I might bang me some Maze” line from Big Pokey. That was early Houston SLAB music.

Every few months another cultural institution gets trashed by some conglomerate for short term profit and loads of talented, hard working people lose their jobs. We mourn it and we move on, but this world is getting remade by those with no interest in art, culture, or people.

Latest update on the Bandcamp employees' unionizing effort
Rather than come out in support, or acknowledge their employees' legal rights, the top brass chose instead to hire this famous union-busting legal firm right out of the gate foley.com/en/services/practi…

ALT a presentation slide that reads: "INSTRUCTIONS. We’re calling on our supporters to email Bandcamp’s leadership and call for no more union busting. We expect leadership may filter out certain words, so feel free to get creative. We encourage you to keep it positive and remind Ethan that our union will be good for Bandcamp. When you’re done, grab a screenshot of your email and tag us on social media @BandcampUnited."
ALT a presentation slide that reads: "EXAMPLE EMAIL. To: [email protected] Dear Ethan, I am writing to ask that Bandcamp and Epic leadership uphold workers’ right to form an inclusive union and stop all union-busting. Bandcamp has been a lifeline for artists and labels in the past couple of years, and I am disappointed to see a platform dedicated to fairness infringe on workers’ rights to form a union. All workers deserve a seat at the table when deciding their working conditions."

B L A C K I E was featured on Bandcamp Daily with many other great experimental artists in Houston. This is really cool to me. Houston has a long history of experimental music and I'm grateful to be a part of it.

one of my all-time favorite music experiences is one time i watched @B_L_A_C_K_I_E perform in an abandoned house — he was attacked by a dog during his song and he just kept on performing — i asked him about it afterwards & he said something like “the dog was just being a dog” lol
