Researchers have detected individual collisions of Kr, Xe, and SF6 with an optically levitated nanoparticle, validating theoretical predictions and providing a proof-of-principle for primary pressure sensor designs.

ALT At the bottom, the figure displays a plot that charts the z-position of the nanosphere (series of vertical blue lines) and the reconstructed impulse amplitude (series of smaller vertical orange lines) over a 2ms window. Time is on the x-axis, and z position and impulse are on the y-axis. At the top, two smaller graphs show enlarged sections of the main plot, corresponding to two impulse events. The top-left graph displays electrical impulse and the reconstructed wave form. The top-right graph displays the reconstructed wave form from a candidate collision event with a Xenon atom. In both graphs, a dashed black line represents the signal template.
We are seeking candidates for the Berkeley Lab Hoffman Postdoctoral fellowships, an experimental nuclear safety-focused position. Specifically, my group can host a postdoc to work on our QuIPS experiment (link below). If interested, please reach out!

Very nice work. One small step closer to the gravitational entanglement measurements proposed with levitated diamonds.
@ScienceAdvances oist.jp/ja/news-center/news/…
Out beyond the convex hull, there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lays down in that grass...

Here's a sharper version. Genuine question. Are any of these new OAI results not obviously in the "convex hull" of what we already knew?
I updated myself six months ago that these things will solve all such problems. If there's anything surprising in here, please tell me...
Have I entered my AI luddite era? I'm totally unimpressed by this list. So a tool previously used to solve a bunch of math problems solved a bunch more math problems. What bayesian update am I supposed to do with this exactly?

Replying to @KyleCranmer @AnthropicAI
How about finding the first UV divergence in N=8 SUGRA? Is that out of reach? Would be a very cool result and probably more of a milestone in amplitudes
Given the power of AI I have been studying increasingly complex physics systems, since I am less limited by my personal computational ability. Unfortunately, this appears to mean I am now a condensed matter physicist.

Very proud of this one

I think breaking down mathematicians' motivations into like 'wanting to understand math' and 'ego' misses a lot. Ppl value participating in a process where the growth of their individual understanding has a rich two-way relationship to the growth of collective understanding
Welcome to the era of zero-trust math research.
You can't even send a preprint of your work to colleagues privately now without having to worry about somebody trying to scoop you with 10k agents on an internal model. Sad times.
We built this @BerkeleyLab. It detects electrons from nuclear decays. Could not be more proud of this little machine or the people who made it.
