The Madras High Court has constituted a five-member Board to oversee the administration of Chidambaram’s Sri Nataraja Temple.
But the Board’s proposed remuneration raises a serious legal question.
The non-ex-officio members are to receive ₹2 lakh each per month, that's ₹72 lakh annually in total, besides vehicles, drivers and security, with expenses to be met from HR&CE funds.
Here lies the discrepancy: a June 2026 Madras High Court ruling reportedly restricted the use of the statutory HR&CE Administration Fund under Section 96. If the same fund is being used to pay these expenses, how is that legally permissible?
The Administration Fund and other HR&CE funds are not automatically interchangeable. The precise source of payment and its legal basis must be clarified.
May Sri Nataraja bless Hindus, the honourable judges, and the ex-officio Board members, with the wisdom 🙏🏽
