It's a trend for taxonomists in general. If we lose the ability to identify different life forms, we cannot quantify/recognize/understand invasions, extinctions, & ecosystem function. Imagine trying to repair a steel structure if you can't distinguish different types of bearings.

The Budke Lab @UTK_EEB is recruiting #PhD students to start fall 2025. Applications due Dec 1. Check out our lab website to see if your research interests are a good fit jmbudke.github.io & then reach out via email. Please RT & thanks! #gradschool #phdjourney
Screen shot of this website http://jmbudke.github.io Our research focuses on the development, evolution, and function of plant structures. We study morphological features that are used to distinguish species taxonomically and those that are important for reproduction and fitness. Some of the tools we use to address our research questions are natural history collections, molecular systematic techniques, electron microscopy, and manipulation experiments. Interested in joining the lab? We are recruiting graduate students for the December 2024 application deadline. If our lab seems like it might be a good fit for you, please send an email expressing your interest with your CV/resume and unofficial transcripts attached to Dr. Jessica Budke jbudke@utk.edu

Whilst digitising the #Hymenoptera slide collection at the museum, we came across this beautifully preserved specimen labelled "The Anatomy of an Insect" 📸   It clearly shows the full external structure of the Common Wasp, Vespula vulgaris.

A great example of an herbarium specimen capturing a larger cultural context. This specimen was mounted with a newspaper article describing plans to convert part of southern Michigan’s dunes into a sand mine. Despite protests, the state commission approved the mining operation.
