“Our goal with ourworldindata.org is to give a wide overview of the big problems the world faces, show that it is possible to make progress against even very large problems, and inspire people to work on these big problems to achieve the progress that is possible. We want to contribute to a culture that seeks progress — a culture of people deciding to study the very large problems we face and taking the initiative to contribute to progress against them. We want to inform thoughtful people about the world’s large problems and the possibility of progress so that they can become the engineers, politicians, voters, donors, activists, founders, or researchers who will solve them.”

📊 Data update: Where are people being forced from their homes because of conflict or disaster? A record 83 million people globally were living in internal displacement at the end of 2024 — forced from their homes by conflict, violence, or natural disasters, but remaining within their own country's borders. Unlike refugees, who cross international borders, internally displaced people are often harder to track and don't show up in all migration statistics. Our colleague Tuna Acisu recently updated around 20 of our charts with the latest data from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). The data covers disaster-related displacements since 2008 and conflict-related displacements since 2009, with global coverage across all countries. This data helps us better understand the human impact of natural disasters, conflicts, and violence — and helps NGOs and governments support those who have been displaced.

A great website upgrade to Our World in Data, engineered by our colleague Sophia Mersmann!
Love this new little feature on Our World in Data. When you view data for world regions defined by providers such as the WHO or the UN, a new tooltip appears. It explains how the region is defined and shows it to you on a small world map.
