I’m old school. Yes, we have 3DSMax, Blender, AutoCAD, Maya, Adobe & more––but before that process––the feel of a pencil, the scribble of a note, the ponder of: does that work? How do I to get from A to B? what happens if? What does history tell us about naval ship design?
Just a reminder, the phaser arrays designed for a Galaxy Class were a weapon system more powerful than something the Borg had come across before. A remarkable upgrade from TMP/Lost Era systems.
Fascinating to think of ENTD had been retired that Starfleet would have been down to probably 1 operational GC hull, 1 in workup and 2 in build. It may have resulted in the cancellation of the class. Would have they made NCC-1701-E another GC….
The damage to NCC-1701-D is so significant after the battle with the Borg and their assault on Earth, that the Board of Admiralty ask GCP Chief Architect if the investment is worth keeping ENTD. But politics, the FED saving face & other matters impact GCPs decision.
With all the plotting/hate for the ENTD & Galaxy Class, to get rid of it, since at least S6 of TNG, it would be a shame for those if it became the most loved ship of Trek. 😉
Even so, if they hated it so much, why authorise it its final model build in the first place… 💅
Thank you Gene, from a generation of humanity who all wanted to be explorers of the final frontier and the human frontier and then providing the best ship to do that in. #startrek60
I still think physical and 3d model makers are hard on the ‘Aztec’. We have to consider at the perspective our eye is to the ship, you are many 100s meters away, but Aztec is done like you are only 10s meters away. You can barely see it on ENTD/TMP Connie in most shots.. IMHO
Another fault in ST 'Generations' is that the saucer separation systems for auto-destruct/warp core breach calculates the minimum safe distance for the saucer prior to destructive blast wave. Else what's the point in a lifeboat if caught in a blast radius!
By the end of TOS series one it was confirmed only 12 Constitution class were built, so saying there is under 20 Galaxy Class reinforces the reality that front line flagship classes are never built in numbers.
Space is vast. Starfleet is limited.
[not to scale by Probert:]
The beauty of All Good Things (TNG S7, 26/27) is it provided the perfect excuse for head canon, alternative universes, parallel universes etc and for Trek fan's to reject or accept anything really. One to think about :)
So there is an apology tour for what The Transformers Movie did to so many, is there going to be an apology for blowing up the ENTD in Star Trek?
And before you start, rebuilds in alt universes don’t count.
OTD 25 July 2378
Starfleet Journal for Naval Architecture confirms uprate in the ‘fighting four’ Galaxy Class weapon power and load capacity, was due to being stripped of latching systems. Rather, they are the only four Galaxy Class that cannot saucer separate.
OTD 12 July 2372
Galaxy Class Starship Availability turns the tide peaking at five ships of the class. Numbers increase as of 2372, reaching an emergency number during the dominion war, something not repeated again until into the 2380s.
Remember the saucer section is life extending lifeboat designed to operate in space and only ditch to a planet as a matter of last resort. It is not a starship in its own right.
Although a RollerCoaster in Germany, with a mock TNG set, it just shows how the colour pallete and lighting etc of TNG still holds up exceptionally well.
Better than blue shifted, metallic, dark hellscapes I guess.
Let's be positive eh?

The Fandom Rebellion continues, this fan builds the internals of TMP era constitution class. Nice!
I’m confident a revised Galaxy class one exists too 😉
