47 years in the Royal Marines comes to an end in style with 1SL. It’s been an extraordinary journey, and I feel incredibly lucky to have shared it with so many fantastic people. The Corps gave me purpose, opportunities and experiences, but ultimately, it gave me a family.

The massed bands of HM Royal Marines formed up for Beating Retreat a tradition dating back to the 17th century, when drums were used to signal the end of the day and call troops back to camp. Today, it has evolved into one of the most iconic military ceremonies in the world.

Falklands War. Hard to believe it was 44 years ago tonight, but I remember the moment, locking eyes with the Marine beside me, no words just the understanding that neither of us knew what waited ahead… only that we would face it together. Then we turned left into the fire 🫡
In my 47-year career, I have experienced many incredible moments. However, I am truly honoured to have received my valedictory certificate, at the Presentation of Colours, signed and presented by The King. 🫡
44 years ago tonight we crossed the water in tense silence landing in the dead of night, clambering ashore onto the Falklands. As my boots hit the ground, my first experience of war had began.🫡

This is a crucial moment and our people are ready to react to what is required. HMS Dragon and Wildcat helicopters from RNAS Yeovilton are preparing to deploy to the Eastern Mediterranean, ready to defend British interests and support the collective self-defence of our allies.
As the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, we are deploying our Type-45 Destroyer, HMS Dragon, to the Eastern Mediterranean.
We are also sending two Wildcat helicopters to Cyprus to bolster drone defence for our Cypriot partners.
Working alongside our allies, our Armed Forces are committed to protecting regional stability and keeping people safe.
