It was an honour to join some of the 1,500 members of the Armed Forces out in London today collecting donations for the @PoppyLegion appeal. It was my grandad, who served in the Navy during the Second World War, who brought me up to wear the poppy with pride to commemorate those who have given such service and sacrifice for this country.

Good news on the new budget from @JohnHealey_MP with a strong commitment on defence. The UK role in transatlantic security is vital, and I welcome this move to put 🇬🇧 on a credible path towards meeting the commitment made by all NATO Allies in The Hague - to ensure we’re all investing what’s needed to remain ready & able to deter aggression and defend our freedom and security

Clear evidence that the Chancellor’s pledge to lift defence spending to a new target of 3% of GDP by 2030 is now a firm commitment by Andy Burnham’s government ⬇️
I’ve said since my first day as Defence Secretary that I trust this Chancellor to give us what we need to keep our country safe. Today demonstrates why. We’re delivering the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War. Today the Chancellor not only restated our NATO commitment to spend 3.5% of GDP by 2035, but also to spend 3% by 2030. The gravest dangers of the 20th century are returning, armed with the technologies of the 21st. The Conservatives left our armed forces underfunded and hollowed out. This Labour Chancellor is investing in our defence - a Britain ready to fight and a country worth fighting for. 🇬🇧🌹

🚨 Three of the UK’s four nuclear deterrent submarines are out at sea, it is understood. It is not clear why but at least one of the boats will be armed with nuclear warheads and on routine patrol. An expert said one of the other Vanguard-class submarines would likely be working up to take over the patrol, while the third could be undergoing sea trials. The Ministry of Defence declined to comment. @larisamlbrown first broke this story in @thetimes The unusual deployment of most of the fleet indicates improved availability, which has been a problem for the Royal Navy’s submarine service in recent years. It will doubtless be noticed by the UK’s enemies.

1/7 I have two simple tests for British AI, driven by our values. Is it safe? And is it ours to shape? 🇬🇧 Today, Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP is announcing a major, ambitious package of investment to strengthen Britain's defences against emerging threats, back British innovation, and build our technological independence.

🚨 The production of vital gun barrels for tanks and artillery pieces has resumed in the UK for the first time in two decades, with a German defence company making the weapons.  Wes Streeting, the defence secretary, officially opened the Rheinmetall “gun hall” in Telford, Shropshire.  The sprawling facility has the capacity to produce up to 245 long, metal barrels a year and more than 50 breeches - the block of metal at the rear end of the barrel.  Such numbers would be woefully inadequate were the UK ever to face a major war - but the manufacturing rate could be significantly ramped up in a time of crisis. Ukraine says it has destroyed more than 12,000 Russian tanks and more than 5,000 artillery pieces since the start of Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion more than four and a half years ago.  “Britain is back in the business of making the weapons that our Armed Forces need to defend the nation against our adversaries,” the defence secretary said.  “From an empty site to full production in eight months, this is rapid reindustrialisation in action.” The new site - 11,500 square metres - has production lines for two different types of weapons system.  One is for the 120mm gun that will fit on the updated Challenger 3 tank, which has yet to enter service.  The other is a 155 mm weapons system that will be used for artillery pieces.  General Sir Roly Walker, the head of the British army, also attended the factory opening along with Armin Papperger, the German chief executive of Rheinmetall AG. Mr Papperger is thought to be on a Russian hit list. The Kremlin is accused of seeking to assassinate key defence industry figures in Europe as part of the a campaign of hostile action to undermine NATO’s push to rearm and to support Ukraine.  The Rheinmetall boss said: “We are committed to investing in the UK for the long term, expanding our industrial footprint and working together to deliver the capabilities needed for the future.  “By combining Rheinmetall’s expertise with British skills, innovation and manufacturing, we are strengthening the UK’s sovereign industrial capacity, supporting the Armed Forces and contributing to the security of NATO and Europe.”

At a time when environmental protection suffers from systemic neglect across much of Iraq and the Middle East, PM @masrourbarzani's sustained focus on safeguarding Kurdistan’s natural heritage deserves recognition. This initiative presents an opportunity to contribute scientific expertise, research partnerships and conservation funding to strengthen environmental resilience in the wider Middle East, since Kurdistan's extraordinary biodiversity is a national asset and integral to the ecological richness and resilience of the region.
I am pleased to be a part of the launch of the Kurdistan Biodiversity Project, an initiative by Kurdistan Foundation to document and protect our natural heritage for future generations. The project will log our wildlife and plant species, support scientific research, and strengthen conservation policies by building a database of Kurdistan’s flora and fauna. Protecting our biodiversity is a responsibility we all share. biodiversity.krd
