Sergey Lazo (1894 -1920) was a Moldovan nobleman and a wartime officer in the Russian Imperial Army. During the October Revolution he was a Soviet military leader and statesman who took an active part in establishing Soviet power in Siberia and the Far East. In 1917, he became a Left Socialist Revolutionary, and in the spring of 1918, a Bolshevik. In March–August 1918, he was commander of the Transbaikal Front and fought against the White Guards. Later, he fought in Bolshevik partisan units in the Vladivostok and Partizansk areas, commanding the Red Army during the Suchan Valley Campaign against American forces. In April 1920, he and his two comrades were captured by the Japanese interventionists and executed at the end of May. According to a popular version, Lazo was burned alive in the firebox of a steam engine. Until the end of the USSR, Sergey Lazo remained one of the most respected heroes of the Civil War.
