If we want to begin valuing doctors in the UK, overhauling medical recruitment must be a top priority.

This narrative is harmful and unfair. All the doctors I work with want to make changes to improve the lives of our patients and communities. However, doctors will always stand up for ensuring the safety of patients and that any changes are based on evidence-based practice.
"The medical profession is locked into a way of life... they are deeply conservative." Leading clinician Prof Sir John Bell tells @amolrajan and @bbcnickrobinson that Wes Streeting will have to face down the British Medical Association to reform the NHS. 🎙️ The Today Podcast ⬇️

Fantastic to see the start of this programme to detect hypertension in all outpatients at @BucksHealthcare - hypertension affects 1/4 of all UK adults, half of whom are undiagnosed or uncontrolled. Thanks for all the hard work @TheBenCollins and @DrFionaTsang

@BucksHealthcare is tackling undiagnosed hypertension, by putting patient-operated blood pressure monitors in waiting areas. Thanks to @DrFionaTsang and med student Selena for championing this, and Breast Unit fab receptionist Lucy for being a guinea pig 💪

Like for many doctors, I found #Breathtaking really tough watching. Every small detail made it more challenging. Looking back at that time, and where we are now, makes me wonder how quickly those sacrifices are being forgotten.

Of course, pay is the main challenge in the @TheBMA @NHSEmployers negotiations, but if one of the other outcomes isn’t fixing situations like this with a move toward preferential rostering and personalised pay - I’ll be profoundly disappointed.
Just had my rota through for the next 8 months. Despite me giving over one year's notice, they have rostered me to work 9AM-9PM on the weekend of my wedding 🙃

E-rostering may offer a solution by facilitating new approaches to doctors’ rotas, including self-rostering, personalised work schedules and improved rota management. Dr @oxforddoc and Dr Nicholas Turner explore e-rostering in the December #Commentary: ow.ly/VSzL50QiMgk

Enjoyed talking to @RobBAylesbury about @BucksHealthcare's work to accelerate the rollout of lipid lowering therapies across Buckinghamshire - high LDL ('bad') cholesterol is associated with 1 in 4 heart and circulatory disease deaths in the UK.

Also met the superb team @BucksHealthcare Research & Innovation Centre. Heard about great work by the Clinical Trials team; the role of AI & Med Tech; & a drug to cut cholesterol & so reduce heart attacks & strokes that GPs can prescribe: all excellent ways to improve healthcare

Great to talk to the @NHSEmployers Guardian of Safe Working Conference 2023 about the work at @BucksHealthcare to embed self-development time in all doctors' rosters with a policy that is fair, hollistic and treats Postgraduate Doctors as working professionals.

July is looking like an expensive month to be a doctor. £433 for the @gmcuk and £688 for the @JRCPTB. Over £1000 to be a medical registrar, even before paying indemnity fees. Makes the case for pay restoration even stronger @BMA_JuniorDocs
