between this and recent discourse on miasma being "too masturbatory," i think an odd resistant to evolution aftertaste is left in these critic's mouths whenever a film depicting queer experiences not just takes itself seriously, but allows itself to take up space to be grand
“La Bola Negra,” a new film by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, dramatizes gay repression and liberation across three interconnected stories. At first, the year is 1937 and viewers are thrust deep into the Spanish Civil War, where a Nationalist soldier and a wounded Republican freedom fighter exchange furtive glances. By the end, it’s 2017, and a Madrid-based historian need only look to Grindr to satisfy an urge. The movie “wants to be a sweeping historical epic of gay longing—a film about what it means to be a man who desires other men in times of war and peace,” Justin Chang writes. Instead, the directors have produced “a film that insists, arrogantly and aggressively, on its own monumentality”. Even compelling performances from Glenn Close, Penélope Cruz, and Lola Dueñas fail to rescue the extravagantly overwrought film. Read Chang's full review: newyorker.com/culture/the-cu…

Sebastian sides with the Nationalists bc they find him and hand him a gun. He wants to survive. But survival becomes complicity, and "I had no choice" is how so many have justified their complicity in fascism. We sympathize with him, but that doesn't absolve him. And he knows it.

Notice how none of the men moved a muscle while he was attacking her, but as soon as she defended herself, suddenly they ALL knew how to intervene.

13. Procrastinating like my life depends on it, then somehow thriving under a deadline: I can spend three weeks avoiding something. Three weeks. Thinking about it. Knowing I need to do it. Feeling guilty about not doing it. Doing everything except it. Then the deadline arrives, and suddenly… WE HAVE A SYSTEM. I become the most productive woman alive. I don’t even understand it. My parents didn’t raise a quitter, but they sure did raise a woman who apparently believes urgency is a productivity tool.
I know I’m neurodivergent because I’m dyslexic but reading this thread I’m like “it’s maybe more than that” I relate to a lot of things. I was 2 ignoring it until recently that I decided to accept it because it started to get worse (maybe is because I’m more aware of it).
