Solar power has been the fastest growing energy technology in history, and wind has only been slightly slower.
Still a long ways to go, but this growth points the way to a possible clean energy future.
Change is possible.

We are closing in on "tripling global renewable capacity" by 2030👍
But, emissions may not fall as fast as hoped because..
1. Less wind is installled versus more solar than expected. And wind capacity generates c.x2 electricity of solar capacity, so the same capacity means less generation. It would make sense that a higher solar:wind ratio means the tripling capacity target needs to be raised?
2. Higher electricity demand growth than expected. This means renewable's share rising is even less fast, reducing coal+gas gen by less than modelled. It would make sense that a higher electricity demand also means more renewables to meet that?
Does the renewable capacity target therefore need increasing?
(sorry I had to butcher IEA's graphic to show this😅)

NEW RESEARCH: Heat pumps are highly efficient & can be flexible.
Heat pumps reduce households’ total energy use by 40%.
Time-of-use pricing for heat pumps is effective at shifting demand - customers with ToU tariffs halved their consumption during the evening peak and saved 18% on bills.

Low-emissions sources of electricity, led by solar, are on track to make up almost half of global generation by 2026, up from just under 40% in 2023
This is expected to push power sector emissions into structural decline in the coming years

To achieve energy & climate goals, the world needs to add or replace 80 million kilometres of power lines by 2040.
That’s the size of the entire global grid built over the past 100 years and enough to wrap around the Earth roughly 2,000 times.
