hiring a CMO first is burning money on strategy decks
your first marketing hire should be a borderline unhinged execution machine who:
- tests channels
- builds while others are planning
- treats data as decision fuel
- ships without excessive meetings
1. hire a doer who delivers across functions
2. scale what actually brings users
3. only then build specialized teams
i've watched startups fail with perfect "brand guidelines" and zero traction while swiss army knife marketers built empires on pure execution.
strategy without results is just expensive LARPing.
the market rewards action, not theory.
Marketing hiring order for new teams:
- FIRST hire a marketing generalist, aka CMO / Head of Marketing to work on the narrative and strategy
- Then hire for branding & visual assets
- Then hire for content, social and community
- Only after engage in any paid marketing
CAUTION: Not following the order wastes your time, money & nervous cells.
