🇧🇷 BREAKING: Following a narrow victory by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro refused to concede the runoff election and announced plans to seek an annulment.
According to The New York Times Live Updates, the legal challenge centers on an unprecedented last-minute decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours nationwide by two hours. The extension, requested by both campaigns due to local disruptions, created widespread confusion. Because the ruling came down minutes before the scheduled closing time, some polling places had already turned off their voting machines and could not reopen them.
Four electoral lawyers interviewed by the publication called the situation unprecedented. Lawyer Priscilla Sodré Pereira characterized it as an extremely serious, critical situation. Professor Fernando Neisser of the Fundação Getulio Vargas explained that an annulment remains a legal possibility if the final margin is narrow and evidence shows that extended hours disproportionately favored one candidate's strongholds.
