Virunga National Park is pleased to announce that community trackers observed a newborn in the Bageni family last Saturday. Ruzuzi gave birth to a male infant. This is the fourth birth recorded in the Bageni family this year, including a rare set of twins born in January. The group now numbers 61 individuals, confirming its status as the largest known mountain gorilla family on Earth. This marks the 17th birth recorded in the Park this year. We warmly thank the European Union and UNESCO, as well as everyone involved in our adopt-a-gorilla programme, for their continued support of mountain gorilla conservation in Virunga National Park.

Lions are the only big cats that naturally live in social groups. Females usually stay with the pride they were born into, while young males leave as they mature to live alone or form coalitions. Since 2022, Virunga’s lion restoration project has studied and protected the Park’s lions to support their recovery. In the Ishasha Valley, shared with Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, Virunga’s Rangers and field teams work with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to track the lions using GPS collars, camera traps and patrols. Protecting lions means protecting the savanna and the ecosystem they help sustain. 📸 Katya Emmanuel @UgWildlife #Lions #BigCats #IshashaValley #LionConservation

Today is #OctoberBigDay, when birders around the world try to record as many species as they can in 24 hours. In Virunga National Park, Conservator Assistant Didi and six Rangers are taking part while continuing a much longer count: of the 710 bird species recorded in the Park, the team has now observed 481. “We find the greatest variety of species in the Park’s vast savanna. Food is abundant there, thanks in part to a lake rich in fish, and the open vegetation gives excellent visibility for observation. The hardest species to find are the ones that move around at night, such as owls and other nocturnal birds of prey.” – Didi Monitoring birds helps us track the health of the whole ecosystem. Photo n°1: The Shoebill Photo n°2: The African Paradise Flycatcher Photo n°3: The Black-tailed Oriole Photo n°4: The Blue Malkoha #BirdWatching #Birding #eBird

Today is #DAFDay. Running an Ebola checkpoint is painstaking work: long shifts, strict quarantine protocols, and huge dedication from Virunga's Rangers and health workers. They do it amid continued instability and violence in eastern Congo, where millions of people are displaced and vulnerable. Still, our teams hold the line. So far, we've screened more than 1.5 million people on the three main routes out of Ituri, the epicentre of the outbreak. But there are still gaps. Five more screening stations are needed to close them. . . Photo by Katya Emmanuel
