Coyne is right: there is no table. This isn’t a negotiation, it’s a shakedown — and the demand gets bigger every time they come back. No deal is a position you can revisit. A bad deal is permanent.
"Get back to the trade table." That's what it always comes down to: negotiate the non-negotiable with someone who cannot be negotiated with.

For those keeping score, Conrad Black gave up his 🇨🇦 citizenship 25yrs ago to accept a British peerage. He was later convicted of fraud & obstruction in the 🇺🇸, serving 3yr+ in federal prison. Then he published a shamelessly glowing biography of Donald Trump & he pardoned him.

Maybe, if you go far enough back in time, you can find a government or a leader crazier than this -- maybe -- but I guarantee there have been none as adolescent.

Bessent compares Canada to a little dog that used to yip at his German Shepherd: This little yipping dog would just bark away… one day the German Shepherd had enough.

THIS is very interesting.
No idea how common this is, but moving to Canada gives these US manufacturers: 1. Cheaper input costs (no US tariffs) 2. Better access to foreign markets (thanks to Canada's FTAs & retaliation against US exports) 3. No consumer boycotts

Why are people still arguing about this. This wasn't even an agreement to agree (which isn't an agreement). It was an attempted shake down. Regardless of how the gov't got to the point of walking away, the point is they walked away. – at Toronto, Ontario
The auto tariffs were reason enough to reject the deal, because there was no deal: the Americans reserved the right to raise any tariffs at any time, including the ones they'd just lowered. And even if they had not been so scrupulous as to stipulate this in advance, we know that Trump's signature is worthless. The Europeans could tell you about the value of Trump's deals. So we would have formally signalled our acceptance of double-digit tariffs on a major industry, in flagrant violation of a free trade treaty Trump himself negotiated, in return for ... six magic beans basically. And that's not even including the constraints on our ability to negotiate trade deals with third countries. And all of this would only have been prelude to the further concessions to be extracted in the renegotiation of CUSMA 2.0 — which would have been no more binding on Trump than the first one was. This is just dilatory.

Trump touts Ford F-150 production at Rouge Assembly is going ‘24/7’ because of him. “I don’t want Canadian parts, I don’t want Canadian anything.” The engines for those trucks come from a Ford factory in Windsor. He’s now threatened a 50% tariff on them. This is what I mean.

For Americans this is a trade war. For Canadians it's existential. Joking about making them the 51st state and saying their consent doesn't matter tends to do that. Good politicians make it easy for the other side to say yes. This made it impossible.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”. The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
