In the 12 years my daughter raced, the wildest thing was the 3 separate times young men came up and were 100% serious when they said, “I would beat you if I could race.” The average person has no idea the skills required.

I have discussed sim racing with many pro racers over the years, because I’ve always been curious why some enjoy it and some hate it.
This is my finding:
Racers who started out sim racing as a child enjoy it, and the experience translates well to real life.
Racers who started out racing in real life and then go to the sim can’t stand the lack of inputs that they experience in a real car.
I went down many rabbit holes until Laura Hayes recently provided this answer that makes perfect sense to me.

The “cooler” systems has several points of possible failure with dangerous consequences.
But these ice vests work well for a race that is about 2 hrs or less. No points of failure. Worked great for me for 2 - 2.5 hr stints in a high humidity endurance race.
Added the ice neck horseshoe and I was actually comfortable.

In 2016, a week after Rossi won his rookie Indy 500, he came to Texas to promote the upcoming race at TMS. We got a phone call inviting us to a celebration lunch with Rossi and TMS president Eddie Gossage along with about 300 other ticket holders.
We spoke with Eddie and showed him a school absence note that I wanted Alexander to sign. Eddie invited me up on stage, Rossi put the wreath around my neck, signed the note and we shared a milk toast.
The next week, Rossi had me out to the garage and showed me the car. It was a so cool.
I had just started racing karts. I had dreams, but never expected that I would actually continue on to race cars.
