🏈 THE ORIGINAL MOUNTAIN WEST VS. THE NEW PAC-12. THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE!
Remember when the schools leaving the Mountain West were supposedly creating a much stronger football conference?
Let's compare what the ORIGINAL Mountain West would look like today had realignment never happened against the newly formed Pac-12.
ORIGINAL MOUNTAIN WEST 2026 RECORDS
🏈 New Mexico: 7–1
🏈 Boise State: 7–1
🏈 Air Force: 6–2
🏈 Fresno State: 5–3
🏈 Wyoming: 5–3
🏈 UNLV: 5–3
🏈 San Jose State: 4–5
🏈 San Diego State: 4–5
🏈 Utah State: 3–5
🏈 Colorado State: 3–5
🏈 Nevada: 3–5
🏈 Hawaii: 2–6
COMBINED RECORD: 54–44
WINNING PERCENTAGE: 55.1%
🔵 NEW PAC-12 2026 RECORDS
🏈 Boise State: 7–1
🏈 Oregon State: 5–3
🏈 Fresno State: 5–3
🏈 Texas State: 4–4
🏈 San Diego State: 4–5
🏈 Utah State: 3–5
🏈 Colorado State: 3–5
🏈 Washington State: 1–8
COMBINED RECORD: 32–34
WINNING PERCENTAGE: 48.5%
LET THAT SINK IN!
The original Mountain West would have SIX teams with winning records.
The newly formed Pac-12 has THREE.
The original Mountain West's combined winning percentage would be 6.6 percentage points HIGHER than the new Pac-12's.
And let's not forget that New Mexico is sitting at 7–1 and nationally ranked!
We were told this realignment was about building a stronger football conference. But looking at the results, you have to wonder whether the original Mountain West was actually the better football product.
The Pac-12 may have purchased the branding and reshuffled the membership, but that doesn't automatically translate into better football.
MY QUESTION: Did the Pac-12 actually build something better, or did it simply dismantle a conference that was already competitive?
Because right now, the records certainly don't make a convincing argument for the new Pac-12.
