I don’t know whether anyone here will be able to go back. Any one of our lives could end a minute from now. ANY OF US! Good cinema can do exactly that… Something can end suddenly. Just like that. It ends, and nobody knows what happened or what comes next. And that’s why it ends without everything being resolved. It leaves things hanging. Resolving everything is the easiest thing in the world. I could write a beautiful, neatly wrapped-up ending for a film in fifteen minutes. With all the right answers. But believe me, when you leave the cinema after watching something like that, you won’t think about the film at all‼️ For me, what matters is that feeling I get when I watch a film like this, when I experience this kind of cinema. That feeling of not knowing what’s happening back at home. The phone might have rung while I was here. Something might have happened there. I don’t know. When cinema manages to make you feel that uncertainty, that’s when it truly becomes cinema. And of course, we want to tell stories through symbols. We can’t just shout everything we want to say at the audience. Because if we explain everything directly, then it becomes a documentary!! In that case, we might as well put a camera in Erzincan, give the women there their own cameras, and ask them to tell their stories. That would be a documentary. A different medium altogether but if we’re going to tell a story through cinema… That’s how I always approach it… for example, even through a tiny opening like this one in front of us, I can tell the story of an entire society. I can tell the story of the whole world. And more talented person could tell the story of all humanity❗️ That’s what directing is. That’s what cinema really is. When you simplify things down to their essence, you can express something enormous through something very small. And that connects to what I was talking about earlier.
