YC teaches every founder to build, measure, learn and pivot fast. We’ve lived that firsthand. In YCW20, we were building a crypto neobank. But the deeper we went, the more we realised: the real mess wasn’t in banking, it was in accounting. 🧵

you’d think you have your mind, but your mind has you.

just like how 90% of the SaaS is basic CRUD apps with a fancy interface and cron.

Most tasks in the world only require a certain level of intelligence. And that certain level of intelligence is not in the stratosphere.

watching a guy take an illegal U-turn on Market Street (empty road for as far as you could see) made me think AI could have a huge impact on policing. but it also made me wonder if he should even get a ticket for it. police are stuck in this weird spot. let people get away with it and more start bending the rules until it becomes chaos. you can see it happening in most Indian roads where drivers flout traffic rules on a regular basis, AI Cops could be impartial and take the “context” of that specific situation to decide the punishment.

scale allows a company to serve millions of customers, but it also forces the company to make compromises about which customers it serves exceptionally well. and that’s why we will always have startups going after companies that were startups a decade ago and the cycle goes on and on.

my hunch is that most people won’t, perhaps the real joy is the reps you make and the “struggle”

building a $100M+ revenue company is a constrained optimization problem. at any point, you have multiple levers to pull, but every lever you pull reduces your ability to explore the others. there’s only so much surface area you can cover. with infinite resources, you could explore multiple products, throw capital and intelligence at distribution, and find the highest ROI opportunities. this is essentially what VCs do. they can run the search in parallel, across hundreds of founders and markets. founders have to run it sequentially, with their own time, capital, and attention at stake. VCs are constrained by portfolio capital. founders are constrained by runway and the number of shots their creativity allows them to take.

basically everything in your personal life should be pre-computed and require ~0 thinking. if you're thinking lots daily outside of work it's more likely that it's a defense (intellectualization/rumination/rationalization) than actual thinking EXCEPT IF (see screenshot)

dinners used to be a family/friends bonding ritual. in SF, it’s now an “aesthetically curated, community-manager-facilitated, vibe-forward social activation for high-agency founders to perform authentic connection and generate Instagrammable social capital” who wants to get burritos by standing in queue infront of la taqueria?

one thing I miss about Bangalore is that I can ping in the group chat whenever I’m somewhere chilling and someone or sometimes more people would pop in! been a year in sf and I’m still doing calendar invites :/

At Finlens, we proactively reach out to users who pay but don't use it and happily refund them the entire amount. We don’t want revenue from software sitting unused. We’d rather earn the subscription by being genuinely useful.
