The western Internet is full of garbage and a firewall that blocks it preserves sovereignty. The government helps filter out bad info to keep the public safe. In this way they are a guardian, like a big brother.
For some reason Chinese apologists don't understand that "The CCP behaves just like Trump" actually reflects poorly on everyone.
I know a lot of people in the West are baffled by the Mbappé-Mao storm in China - which in itself shows that Mbappé's ignorance doesn't come out of nowhere...
To understand it, here's the best analogy I could think of: imagine the biggest Chinese star in the NBA, with sponsorship deals all over the US. One day he's asked for his favorite meme of himself. He giggles: "the one where they put my face on some guy, I think he was an American slave owner." When the "some guy" in question is George Washington.
Whatever you think of the label, you know exactly how that would land in the US: an ungrateful foreigner getting rich off Americans, laughing at the country's founding father in an offensive way - at least to a big share of the population - without even knowing his name.
A founding father is the story a nation tells itself about where it comes from. Laugh at him as a foreigner while cashing in on that nation's consumers, and that's not going to go well in any country.
The label is also extremely un-nuanced: yes, all important historical figures have their share of darkness and Washington and Mao are no exception.
China actually recognizes this: the official line is that he was "70% right and 30% wrong," and the Party's 1981 resolution condemned how his "personal arbitrariness gradually undermined democratic centralism in Party life and the personality cult grew graver and graver" (marxists.org/subject/china/d…)
Same for Washington: it's officially acknowledged too. Or at least it was until this year: in January, the National Park Service tore down an exhibit in Philadelphia about the people Washington enslaved there, under a Trump executive order targeting content that "inappropriately disparage[s]" Americans (associationforpublicart.org/…). Which goes to show China isn't uniquely touchy about its founding father...
There are too many communists who would side with fascism and imperialism than the working class.
I just saw this! There are people on the roof. Not sure why. Lots of fire trucks are converging on this street.

There's a dual crisis where games take too long/too expensive to make and console upgrades provide far too little value to be worth upgrading which will put the industry into a historical recession.

Just to be clear. This redevelopment goes from 2,000 old NYCHA units to:
2,000 new NYCHA units, plus
1,000 additional new affordable units, plus
2,000 new market rate units
And the old buildings don’t come down until the new buildings have been built and NYCHA residents move in.
Marx's theories of change were based on the idea that there were 99 workers for every boss and numbers were on their side. He could not have expected that within our lifetime there will be more retirees than workers.
I don't think there's anything you could do in a mosque that would make an execution justifiable.
"for kissing" they had sex inside the holiest mosque on the face of the earth, why do we just lie for no reason?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Saudi Interior Ministry said the pair were executed for an "indecent act" (fahisha) inside one of Makkah's mosques but gave no details confirming sex or identifying it as Masjid al-Haram. The man's family stated they were not married and did not know the woman.

The Poconos are beautiful at every time of year, but this is a clear sign the entire region is failing to make housing affordable.
How far are you willing to go for your chance at the American Dream? Since the completion of I-80 in the 1970s, generations of New Yorkers have decamped to the Poconos, transforming a cluster of towns & enduring 3hr roundtrip commutes to their jobs in NYC. thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/…
People used to say that we were in an urgent crisis and we needed immediate action and if you disagreed you were a climate denialist.
If this bill gets one more solar panel added to the grid and if net emissions falls by one gram then it's obviously worthwhile.

“I don't care how much good green energy projects can get approved...it is at the cost of tribal sacred places," said Jessie Barrington of Cultural Heritage Partners, a law firm that represents tribes and helped author the memo
If you put monthly expenses on credit and pay off the card each month, you never accumulate interest but get to prove that you can be trusted with someone else's money. That's good when you have to be trusted with larger expenses. But it's fine to acknowledge you can't be trusted
Seems dumb tbh

Someone who doesn't enjoy the taste of beer has not found their favorite beer yet.
Unpopular opinion; No one - literally not a soul - actually enjoys the taste of beer. Not a single human. Those who claim to enjoy beer, don’t actually. It’s really just a social ritual, a form of self deception… the impact of decades of stacked marketing to convince you that beer is anything but an alcohol delivery mechanism. You can enjoy getting sloshed. You can enjoy the social liberation that alcohol offers. You can enjoy the party. But don’t act like you actually like the taste of beer. You don’t. You might think you do. But you don’t. Because it tastes like it looks: bitter dehydrated piss, with bubbles. In the case of Guinness, like diarrhea, with bubbles. And you know it.
