I met @HigginbothamA at @BrazosBookstore for his book, Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space. Thought I knew the story-Finished the book-a tough read, I learned a lot. Great book, well-researched; interviewed the right people. Highly recommended.

I finished the @DanieldeVise book about The Blues Brothers. Like his book about B. B. King, it was great. Wonderful insights into Belushi and Aykroyd’s lives, the film, the band, the great cameos and much more. Highly recommended.

After watching the Alabama Black Belt episode of @TrueSouthTV, I finally ran up to the @MFAH to see the Gee’s Bend-related quilt they have on display. Nice to see great art recognized and displayed.

Finished Michael Lewis’ Going Infinite about Sam Bankman-Fried. SBF is like no one I’ve ever known. An Effective Altruist who doesn’t believe in normal management approaches and doesn’t understand normal human feelings. Great, fascinating, informative book. Highly recommended.

Finished Isaacson’s new biography of Elon Musk. Really interesting life. If you think you know Elon based on social media posts, I highly recommend you read this book. He is a fascinating and complex person who can’t be categorized by simple descriptors. It was a great book.

Just finished a book that I had to read-because the title is Harold. It’s about a third-grader with a unique mind and thoughts generated (according to Harold) by birds flying through a rectangle in his brain.I really liked Harold-both the character and the book.Highly recommended

Pops was a visionary, fusing his reverb-soaked blues guitar with the gospel harmonies of his family vocal group. Fogerty borrowed his guitar tone, the Stones copped his riffs and arrangements, the Band emulated the Staple Singers vocal interplay, etc. Thanks for everything, Pops
Today we honor Pops Staples, the legendary leader of The Staple Singers, who was born on December 28, 1914. A guitarist and singer-songwriter in his own right, he and his family became major figures in gospel music and later R&B. ❤️

As I always do around Christmas, I dropped by @LemuriaBooks while I’m back in Mississippi. Couldn’t help but notice that @LairdHunt’s Zorrie was strategically placed right in front of a festive Miss Eudora. A true position of honor…

#BobsBurgers Christmas episode, “The Plight Before Christmas,” was touching and beautiful. It sorta snuck up on me. Loved the music. I think it might be a new animated Christmas classic. Watch it!

The great Sarah Polley was on Colbert recently discussing her new film, “Women Talking” and her memoir, Run Towards The Danger. I greatly enjoyed both the film and the book and have been a Polley fan for years. I highly recommend both.

Today would have been Willie Morris’ 88th birthday. I wish he was still around…

Just saw my fav film of 2022. #HCAF22 /@MFAH hosted Sarah Polley’s film, Women Talking. Polley directed/wrote it based on Miriam Toews book. McDormand, Mara, Foy, Buckley, Ivey, McCarthy (both @ the screening) and Whishaw. Great performances. Riveting, moving. Highly recommended.

Surprised to see a MS Highway Patrol vehicle in Houston as I left lunch. Quickly remembered JSU is playing TSU tomorrow. Hate the team is confined to hotel due to senseless murder of Takeoff here but I understand it-Coach Prime gave a great talk to the team. Watch it if you can.

Jeremy Denk performing The Well-Tempered Clavier last night as part of @DaCameraHouston’s At The @MenilCollection series was excellent. So very good. He was also kind enough -though with very tired hands- to sign my copy of his book, Every Good Boy Does Fine. A wonderful evening.

This is a pretty epic view of a recent Falcon 9 launch from the droneship. From launch through first stage landing on the ship.
