Jayne Ozanne’s evidence to the #ConversionBill Committee is incredible 🧵 Like other witnesses in favour, Jayne says it’s ā€œso difficult talking in the abstractā€. It’s not difficult for me to know that I’d go to prison rather than let an 11yr old wear a breast binder.>
Revealing exchange with @NazShahBfd She asks Ms Ozanne about an 11 year old girl who wants to bind her breasts & her parents refuse to purchase the binder. ā€œIt’s so difficult talking in the abstractā€ says Ozanne ā€œI can’t give you a direct answerā€ This is a CRIMINAL law 2 clips

šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ The Chilling Effect Galop cites ā€œparents taking a young person to a psychologist to fix their gender identityā€ as conduct the Bill should prohibit, while urging the Committee to follow the Memorandum of Understanding. Yet the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), a leading professional body for psychotherapists, withdrew from that very MoU over concerns about exploratory psychotherapy and safeguarding children. Parents must be able to seek psychological support for their children, and clinicians must be free to explore gender-related distress without fear of investigation or prosecution. 2/2

šŸ§µšŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ The Chilling Effect Research involving 30 mental-health professionals, including @Genspect founder Dr Stella O’Malley, found that almost half of UK interviewees would stop, or consider stopping, working with gender-distressed patients if passed. There will be a profound chilling effect on professionals working in this field. The draft Conversion Practices Bill is criminalising conversations. 1/2

Genspect Statement on the Puberty Blocker Trial Dr Hilary Cass’s recent remarks in the House of Lords raise profoundly troubling questions about the proposed puberty blocker trial, particularly her description of children who have been socially transitioned since early childhood and who, after 18 months of therapy, still have ā€œabsolutely no sense or concept of living in their biological gender.ā€ We believe it is harmful to socially transition a two-year-old. There is no established evidence base to support our point of view, as this radical intervention has not been adequately studied. Our objection, however, is an ethical judgment informed by what we know about child development and by a duty of care and responsibility towards very young children. Deontology recognises that some acts are fundamentally right or wrong. We do not need to wait for evidence of harm before questioning whether it is ethically acceptable for adults to impose a gender identity on a two-year-old. Most of all, we are extremely concerned by Cass’s language about ā€œliving in their biological gender.ā€ A child who has been socially transitioned since early childhood is entering therapy from a contradictory starting point. Why was this transition initiated, and what role might it have played in shaping or reinforcing the child’s distress? Cass’s account does not explain how a socially transitioned child could somehow resolve their gender dysphoria through therapy while continuing to live within the social transition that may have reinforced it. We should not treat a child’s difficulty imagining life in their own sex as proof that they cannot live in it. We welcome the news that fewer than 20 of the 1,600 children seen are even being considered for the trial. Fewer children will be exposed to the possibility of harm. But the number does not make the decision unimportant, and it does not relieve the Government, clinicians or researchers of their responsibility to scrutinise it. We note that Dr Cass blurs two different questions about consent. Under-16s can consent to treatment if they are Gillick competent; the Court of Appeal said competence must be assessed individually, not by age rules. A trial’s requirement for parental consent and a young person’s assent is a separate research safeguard. It does not overturn Gillick or answer the wider question of whether the trial is justified. Cass treats the court ruling as a reason the Government cannot take a view. The Court of Appeal rejected the lower court’s age-based guidance. It did not rule that the Government must stay out of debate about the trial, its evidence or its policy. ā€œWe do not know of any definite irreversible effectsā€ is not evidence that there are none. She acknowledges that the effects are uncertain, then leans on monitoring and the two-year limit as reassurance. Monitoring can identify problems; it cannot necessarily reverse them. The testosterone-at-the-gym line also sets up a false choice. The alternative to joining the trial is not necessarily obtaining hormones illicitly. It could be continued psychological and family support, or waiting while more evidence is gathered. The central problem remains unresolved. We are considering exposing children to medical interventions whose long-term consequences are uncertain, when there is existing data from the previous puberty blockers trial that has yet to be examined. A child’s inability to imagine living in their own sex is not evidence that doing so is impossible. Nor should the decisions made by adults to socially transition their very young children become the justification for puberty blockers for these children. These children are likely to grow up to be same-sex attracted if they don’t medically transition. Many are neuro diverse. These children deserve the highest standard of care, not to have their puberty blocked as part of a reckless and incoherent clinical trial. hansard.parliament.uk/lords/…

Gender dysphoria (or whatever label you use) is a cluster of symptoms. Just like depression, anorexia and countless other forms of psychological distress. The real question is not whether the suffering is real, it’s how best to respond to it. Taking a psychological approach to psychological distress is neither cruel nor ā€œtransphobic.ā€
1/ I'm critical of mainstream trans activism, especially when it comes to youth gender medicine. But I think it's important to remember that gender dysphoria is real, these are human beings, and that it's possible to criticize a movement without being cruel to individuals.

The Beyond Trans support meetings are indescribable but very special. Some participants come every week, some go through phases of attending, some have just recently detransitioned, others are just finding medical transition hard. It’s a really welcoming and non judgemental space

But it couldn’t be social contagion, folks. It’s just that young people, especially autistic, gay and mentally ill ones, are finally free to be their authentic selves. The sudden explosion of young women who want to cut off their healthy breasts and take testosterone? Well, it’s absolutely not the newest form of self-harm, to which troubled adolescent girls are provably prone, ok? It’s not a consequence of the commonplace fear of becoming an adult woman, with all that that entails. No, there’s nothing to worry about there. The possibility of regret? Naturally, we don’t let minors get tattoos or own guns or vote, because that would be ridiculous, but if they want irreversible surgeries and drug treatments, they must be given them, and everyone around them must immediately agree they are now the opposite sex. That’s called being kind. And the mounting numbers of detransitioners? They were never trans, obviously, and should be mercilessly attacked, especially if they now say they were vulnerable and in a friendship group, online or off, dominated by trans identities, where transitioning was presented as a way to resolve all their social and emotional difficulties. (I have the emails). No, there’s nothing whatsoever to see here. Keep justifying it, keep cheering it on, keep insisting that the doctors and drug companies making serious money out of it all are acting with the purest of motives. Answer every reasonable question with an accusation of hatred and bigotry. Dispel every qualm of conscience with an activist-approved talking point. Reassure yourself that everyone on your dinner party circuit agrees with you. And when, in years to come, we’re all looking back on graphs like this, be proud that you did your bit to monster whistleblowers, parrot unevidenced claims and create the climate of fear that allowed the worst medical scandal in a century to take place.
This data never ceases to "amaze" me. In 2005, very few people received any transition related genital surgery (120 over the whole of šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ), in 2025 it was 4,184. And the shift in the age distribution is staggering: Surgeries on 18-25 year olds were almost non-existent in the noughties, now they dominate every other age group by a large factor. (This is official data)

"These cruel, discredited and damaging practices" Danny. I'm yet to hear what gaps there are in law. Thankfully and rightly so much of the vile practices that were mentioned in debate are already outlawed. Please consider consequences of this highly controversial law.
Very proud my @allianceparty colleague @EoinTennyson MLA finally getting his private members bill on banning conversion practices passed at second stage this evening. These cruel, discredited and damaging practices have no place in a modern inclusive society. šŸ‘ šŸ‘ šŸ‘

ā€œIt makes looking after gay children a crime...this bill causes — and not prevents — gay conversion therapyā€, says Dennis Kavanagh. The Bill is both confusing and confused. It is framed as protecting vulnerable people from coercive attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. In reality, it risks criminalising well-intentioned conversations and imprisoning parents, teachers, therapists, religious communities and even friends. Speaking at the Free Speech Union and Genspect’s event in Belfast on Friday, criminal barrister and co-director of the Gay Men’s Network Dennis Kavanagh highlighted that the law already rightly bans abusive conversion practices. This Bill would create new offences that could criminalise important conversations between parents and their gender-confused children. It will inevitably and inadvertently harm the very children it purports to protect by casting ā€œthe shadow of criminal law across your kitchen tableā€. Watch Dennis and the full event below šŸ‘‡

I can unequivocally explain to the @NHS why phalloplasty/metoidioplasty is not necessary for mental health. In fact it’s very bad for mental health. Short term satisfaction is not a good measure. Objective measures such as suicidality, psychiatric care, unemployment and housing are better. Please read @daniel_h_james piece on this
