ALT Image shows predicted impact of interventions on prevalence of 3 different neglected tropical diseases–gHAT, VL and Chagas disease–from the academic paper ‘The hidden hand of asymptomatic infection hinders control of neglected tropical diseases’. Pie charts show the contribution of different symptomatic or asymptomatic infection states to overall transmission and lines show the prevalence of each infection type. For gHAT it is estimated that many infections could be non-symptomatic (never progress to disease) and contribute considerably to transmission. Following active screening every year the proportion of non-symptomatics would be expected to increase despite a large overall reduction in infection prevalence. For VL most infections are thought to be non-symptomatic, but the main contribution to transmission comes from symptomatic people either with active VL or with the disease sequela post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL).
