At the heart of Nicky Hager’s book is the tale of how a group of cynical hard-right ideologues made racism a winning political platform, not because they’re white supremacists, but because it suited their interests. My Hopetown post is here #nzpol simonwilsonhopetown.substack…

Susan Kare designed the icons, fonts, and visual language of the original Macintosh. She made personal computing feel personal. Her visual work humanized early personal computers, translating complex code into friendly, universal symbols that made technology accessible to everyday users... Kare joined Apple in 1982 to create graphics for the Macintosh, a computer intended to make computing understandable to ordinary people. At the time, screens were crude by modern standards. Every image had to be constructed from a tiny grid of black-and-white pixels. Yet those limitations became the foundation of a new visual language. Working pixel by pixel, Kare created some of the Macintosh’s most recognizable images: the smiling Mac, the trash can, the watch, the bomb and the “Happy Mac” that greeted users as the machine started. She also designed typefaces including Chicago, Geneva and Monaco. Her job was deceptively complicated. A tiny picture had to communicate an action instantly to someone who might never have used a computer before. A trash can meant delete. Scissors suggested cutting. A hand indicated movement. The computer was learning to communicate through familiar objects rather than requiring its users to memorize commands. Kare was also responsible for the distinctive symbol on Apple’s Command key. After Steve Jobs objected to repeatedly displaying the Apple logo in menus, Kare searched reference material and found the looped symbol used on Scandinavian maps to indicate a noteworthy feature. It remains on Apple keyboards today. When Steve Jobs left Apple, Kare later became creative director at NeXT. Her subsequent design work included projects for Microsoft and IBM, extending her influence far beyond the Macintosh. Today we tap, click and recognize icons without giving the process much thought. That familiarity is part of Kare’s achievement. She helped transform the computer screen from something users had to decipher into something they could simply understand. #archaeohistories

I'm a foreigner in Japan. Here's what I think about Japan's "foreigner problem." I started looking more deeply into immigration because the debate had become too politically charged to trust surface-level impressions. Depending on what you read, Japan is either being overwhelmed by foreigners or descending into xenophobia. Neither framing seemed very useful. So I went back to the data and facts to help myself understand what is going on, trying to avoid being influenced by the rhetoric. Here's what I found. Would love to hear more thoughts that can help me understand even better. Comments welcome!
