If this is Purdue’s floor that Painter gets to mold and develop all season long, that’s a promising development - it should’ve won tonight. Daniel Jacobsen was fantastic. In the same breath his foul on the 3-pt shot turned the game in their favor. Still, he’s young, it happens. Jacobsen dominated Diop, who Gonzaga paid over $5 million to get from the portal. He may not put up 22 every night but if he can give Purdue the effort he gave it tonight, its guards will return the favor. He’s Purdue’s most important player to hitting its ceiling, imo. Really struggled shooting down the stretch from the field and free throw line. Probably a mix of fatigue and jitters. This was a lot of our guys’ first big minutes let alone first college game. West will look terrific when he settles in. West and Ertel, two freshmen, had nba summer league reject Xavian Lee in hell when the refs weren’t helping him. It’s clear why he came back. Initially thought Mayer was terrible but then checked the box score. 5 assists, 0 turnovers. He did his job there, however he cannot shoot that poorly and expect to win games. Purdue was 5/21 from three and should have won this game. Gonzaga isn’t UConn but Purdue fought a lot harder tonight when it was missing threes than it did last week. Proud of this young team for repeatedly fighting back in the 2nd half when it was down 9 twice and 11 once. It was cool seeing the Cox-Harris-West lineup. That can be a good lineup to close out games defensively. Caden Pierce is a very good addition. 🚂🏀
