But the terrorists saw her move. “Mom, they’re coming to shoot me again...” Screams in Arabic. A long burst of gunfire. And the call was cut. Alone on the road divider, her body was riddled with bullets at point-blank range. Murdered in cold blood. But Libi was light. Joy. Love. Captain Shir Eilat, 20, an IDF officer and commander of observation soldiers in the Border Defense Corps’ 414th Unit at Nahal Oz, led with exceptional composure on October 7, 2023, as Hamas terrorists stormed the base. She directed forces in real time, activated defensive systems against the attackers, and put her soldiers’ safety and morale first until the end.
