The Sept. 2026 MDOC Mortality Report shows 72 prisoner deaths in 6 months, including 5 synthetic drug overdoses, 3 hangings in 48 hours, and 40 deaths still listed as "pending review."
Michigan families have waited long enough. Urge @GovWhitmer to support HB 5920 & HB 5921 and help move them into law:

Twenty-two years ago tonight, just after midnight on Oct. 25, Maurice Carter died at age 60 after spending 29 years in prison for a crime he did not commit and only three months as a free man.
His friendship with Doug Tjapkes helped inspire the work that became Humanity for Prisoners.

International Wrongful Conviction Day was October 2.
We're posting about it on October 23 because the impact of a wrongful conviction doesn't end when the awareness day is over.
Exoneration is a milestone, not the end of the journey. Many exonerees spend years rebuilding relationships, careers, and lives that were forever altered by injustice.
Today, we recognize everyone fighting every day of the year for truth, accountability, and healing .

In 2004, Maurice Carter died just 3 months after being released from a wrongful conviction that cost him nearly 29 years of freedom. On Nov. 11, HFP Founder Doug Tjapkes turns 90. For decades, he has worked to fulfill a promise he made to Maurice: to clear his name. A posthumous pardon application is now before @GovWhitmer
Help us correct a decades-old injustice and sign the petition to "Pardon Maurice Carter" at change.org/p/grant-maurice-c…

Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day.
We honor the history and resilience of Indigenous communities, especially the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodéwadmi here in Michigan.
But we also recognize the present: Native Americans are disproportionately impacted by incarceration. True justice requires addressing these disparities, and HFP remains committed to advocating for the dignity of every marginalized person behind bars.
For many Michigan families, staying connected to a loved one in prison comes with significant costs. Beginning Oct. 5, communication rates under the new MDOC contract were reduced:
Phone calls: $0.03/min
Video calls: $0.03/min
New tablets are also expected to be provided at no cost next year.
Please share this update.
Only 5 days to go.

Like so many others, we were saddened by @DollyParton's passing on August 25. Through our partnership with @uwlakeshore, we've helped connect incarcerated families with the @dollyslibrary and the gift of free books.
To honor her legacy, an HFP client created and donated this portrait, titled "Is That You, Dolly?"
After years of incarceration, he found purpose in creating beautiful works of art like this.

Over the weekend, HFP Executive Director Mark Hartman joined HFP Board Member Jessa Webber at the Cooley Law School Innocence Project's 25th Anniversary Gala.
Twenty-five years ago, HFP was founded to fight for Maurice Carter, an innocent man imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit. Sadly, there are still too many "Maurices" behind bars today.
We're honored to stand alongside those fighting to bring them home.
Join us Oct. 1 as we honor Maurice's legacy and continue the fight for dignity, justice, and hope.

After 47 years in prison, a Michigan woman with an exemplary record was transferred to the infirmary due to declining health. Unable to work, she lost access to basic hygiene supplies and could not receive donated commissary boxes.
No one should spend their final years worrying about soap or toothpaste.
Join us on Oct. 1 for a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall.
