A Nationwide “Purge” Campaign (!) in Türkiye Ahead of July 15 Two days before the 10th anniversary of July 15, Turkey launched a nationwide operation targeting 968 people alleged to be linked to the Gülen movement. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek described this as a “major purge campaign.” While this statement is extremely alarming, for the past ten years, hundreds of thousands of people have been subjected to investigations, detentions, prison sentences, job loss, travel bans, and social ostracism, often based on vague allegations rather than concrete evidence. Mothers with infants, students, the elderly, and the seriously ill have also been targeted by this arbitrary campaign of persecution. People are not “elements that need to be purged.” No one should lose their freedom because of an alleged connection, family ties, or activities they legally carried out in the past. What Turkey needs is individual evidence, fair trials, and respect for human dignity, not collective punishment and yet another purge. @UN_HRC @UNHumanRights @UN_SPExperts @profbensaul @SRjudgeslawyers @ana_racu @DLeinarte @jorgecontesse @omctorg @ClaudeHellerR @hrw @aforgutu @amnesty

FELÇLİ VE YAŞLI AMCAYA UZUN NAMLULU SİLAHLARLA BASKIN Bu sabah 81 ilde düzenlenen operasyonlarda gözaltına alınanlardan biri de felçli ve yaşlı bir amcaydı. Görüntülerde bir kolunu kullanamadığı, güçlükle yürüdüğü açıkça görülüyor. Buna rağmen evine uzun namlulu silahlarla, maskeli polislerle baskın düzenlediler. İktidarın “terörle mücadele” diye sunduğu tablo işte bu: Yaşlılar, hastalar, engelliler… Vicdanı olan herkes bu görüntüler karşısında utanmalı. Hepinizi Allah’a havale ediyorum. Hakkınızdan Rabbim gelsin.

I call on Türkiye to respect its international and European human rights obligations in terrorism cases
Today, @ECHR_CEDH delivered 893 judgments in three groups, finding that Turkey had breached Articles 7 and/or 6 of the applicants by convicting them of terrorism for using the ByLock app. To date, the Court has delivered over 3,500 identical judgments against Turkey in seven groups of joined cases. Yet Turkey has not adopted general measures to comply with this systemic, flagrant denial of justice. @constantinosefs

Özellikle Büyük Daire’nin Yasak/Türkiyekararından sonra TCK 314. madde kapsamında mahkumiyet kararı vermenin imkansız hale geldiği bir ortamda, bir ağır ceza mahkemesi bakın ne yaptı biliyor musunuz? A Call for Transparent Judicial Appointments in Türkiye The UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Ms. Margaret Satterthwaite expresses concerns about the recruitment process of judges and prosecutors in Türkiye. In her Allegation Letter (AL TUR 4/2026) sent to Türkiye on 12 March 2026, the Special Rapporteur raised concerns regarding recruitment, merit-based selection, and interview procedures for judicial and prosecutorial positions in Türkiye, emphasizing that these practices point to systemic risks and may undermine the independence of the judiciary. This letter is an important reminder that the independence of the judiciary begins not only in the courtroom, but also at the very first stage of entry into the profession. At its core, the letter points to a fundamental principle: judicial appointments must be based on objective criteria, integrity, competence and independence, not on opaque or unverifiable processes. A fair trial requires an independent and impartial judiciary. This communication should be read as a valuable opportunity to strengthen judicial independence in Türkiye, protect the rule of law, and ensure that those entering the judiciary can do so through a fair, merit-based and transparent process. Read full letter here : spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMRe…
🇹🇷 Now Public: In March, I sent a letter to the Government of #Türkiye expressing concern over recruitment, merit and interview procedures for judicial and prosecutorial positions. Reportedly, the criteria, rubrics, and scoring methodology applied during the interview stage, as well as the weighting of interview results in the final selection decision, are not made public in a detailed or auditable manner. International standards consistently emphasize that all decisions relating to the professional career of judges must be based on objective criteria, and that selection, appointment and career advancement must be grounded in merit, taking into account qualifications, integrity, and competence. Crimes Against Humanity in Türkiye? Following its judgment of 16 December 2025 against #Türkiye, in which the European Court of Human Rights (@ECHR_CEDH ) found violations of Articles 7 and/or 6 § 1 of the Convention in respect of 2,420 applications in the Yalçınkaya follow-up cases, the Grand Chamber yesterday delivered another landmark ruling in Yasak v. Türkiye, concerning convictions for membership of a terrorist organisation in which the Court found violations of Articles 7 and 3 of the Convention. Taken together, these recent judgments confirm systemic violations of fundamental rights and freedom in Türkiye (in a context marked by more than two million terrorism-related investigations). This unprecedented volume of State-led criminalisation and persecution inevitably raises the question of whether such acts may, in certain circumstances, be characterised as crimes against humanity under international law. In this regard, please find below Mr Hakan Kaplankaya's (@HKaplankaya) article via Opinio Juris entitled “Targeting a Social Group Through Mass Convictions in Turkey: A Brief Crimes Against Humanity Analysis”, which offers a preliminary legal assessment of this issue.
My latest article, now published on @opiniojuris, examines whether mass convictions targeting the Gülen Movement in Turkey may amount to crimes against humanity, particularly in light of a large body of international judgments. “Targeting a Social Group Through Mass Convictions in Turkey: A Brief Crimes Against Humanity Analysis.” Read it here: opiniojuris.org/2026/05/06/t…
