The earliest known use of the word "gamer" was in the code of laws governing Walsall, England, dated ~1450. The document bans games including cards and backgammon, threatening prison for anyone housing a "gamer" on their property. Proof we have been persecuted since day one

A sad day for Brown. The ancient eight becomes the ancient seven
With deep sadness, we share that the University of Providence Board of Trustees voted today to close the University. Final instruction: August 20, 2027. Our priority is supporting students and employees. Updates: uprovidence.edu

Our thousand year reign of the only generation that knows how to both install a printer *and* read a book begins.
From @ezraklein’s convo with @NateSilver538 — millennial Democrats are ascendant.

it’s easy to take for granted just how spectacularly good This American Life is, week in week out, for years and years

Out of touch liberal elites don’t understand that for the average American the Cheesecake Factory is the nicest place they can imagine. For these people, sweatpants are like tuxedos. They think of Tweety Bird as a kind of God. Don’t you dare condescend to them.

in 2013 you could tweet "holding up the line at taco bell because my adult son wants a chili burger" and they'd give you a sitcom

idk why people talk about “stomp clap” like it was some kind of scourge when really it was a handful of bands who were somewhat popular for like five years

i would love to put my smartphone in a different room and use only my laptop while working but i have to log into enterprise software multiple times throughout the day and need my phone for 2FA so i have no choice
cell phones aren’t druglike, they’re carlike. even if you consciously want to opt out, you can’t, because everyone expects you to have and use one to interact with society. i cannot even use the laundry machines in my building without being forced to use the laundry app.

never gonna happen obviously but man it would be so funny watching elon get humiliated every weekend by a bunch of disdainful europeans
At this point I have no idea why @Tesla doesn't have an F1 team. (Except maybe because it just wouldn't be fair to all the other teams.) But I think we'd all love to see this happen @elonmusk.

It's crazy that there's a tool out there that's become vital to they way I do my job, parent my kids, and make major life decisions; and yet we barely spend more on it than AI
TIL that global spending on alcohol is still larger than AI infrastructure spending this year ($1.7T vs $1.5T)

when AI companies say that AI models have human rights it’s hard to tell if the companies are really that stupid or they just think other people are stupid. from what i’ve seen in silicon valley i would guess both. there’s no greater collection of idiots who think they’re smart

i went to high school with a future Super Bowl winning NFL player. he played offense, defense, special teams. sometimes he would return kickoffs for touchdowns just by lowering his shoulder and blowing through defenders on the open field
For anyone wondering why Arch Manning struggled yesterday, this was his competition in high school:
