In 'Living On Earth' I quickly survey tool use by marine animals and note how limited it is. Dolphin use of sponges to protect the nose is one case. Via @BBC, their use of sponges turns out to be richer. Very good video from the new Blue Planet show. youtube.com/watch?v=q0QFv4iM…

Simulation, world models, lab robots, robot gyms etc are all just proxies for deployment in the end. In order to use any of them well you need to deploy asap. Otherwise you have lots of data - more expensive in some cases than others but never free (including the compute to train). LLMs are great because deployment is easy, even coding is. You learn about the value of your proxies quickly, and can analyze how to tune them better going forward. But just because robotics is hard does not mean you can arbitrarily delay deployment. The most important things about robotics startups right now is not the pitch of the base tech, but the pitch about how to apply it so that you actually test what matters - monkey first!

We made the first AI model you can have a realistic conversation with that was trained entirely on speech! Dessa is a full-duplex speech-to-speech model that you can run on consumer GPUs. This is a GPT3 moment for speech.

At an election science conference I went to in June, a panel was lit up by claims that USPS delays in primaries were causing more ballots to arrive late. Someone asked: Has anyone done research yet to see if USPS changes are tied to ballot rejections? So @propublica did. 🧵

I’m re-quoting this because I think anybody in the world who wants to understand anything by asking the question ״why?״ should be forced to watch this first.
In 1983, a BBC interviewer asked Richard Feynman why two magnets push each other apart — and he refused to answer it. What he did instead is the best seven minutes on thinking ever filmed. Bookmark & watch today, no matter what.

A common sign that you are in an insane millenarian death cult is that you axiomatically convinced that the Apocalypse will happen within a few months, you are constantly on the lookout for signs that it may have started, you feel both fearful and *excited* about it, and you're constantly talking about it with your friends, who happen to *all* have the exact same set of beliefs.

Today, we introduce Priming Models, a new paradigm for training one-step generative models from scratch. No diffusion teacher. No flow map. No CFG. No JVP. We believe this work will challenge how we think about building one-step models. Joint work with @sitanch, @du_yilun, @parkwbin03, Bohyung Han. 🔥 1.19 FID one-step on ImageNet 256×256 while using substantially less compute, e.g., 12X less than Drifting-B, 6X less than Drifting-L 🎨 Scales to text-to-image generation (GenEval 0.82) 🤖 World modeling on RT-1 / Bridge-V2 Priming Model is built on one core message: [Reconstruction pretraining --> Distributional post-training].

BREAKING: 🇫🇷 A major cyberattack has hit supermarket refrigeration systems across France, reportedly causing fresh and frozen food to spoil after hackers remotely manipulated temperature controls. According to BFMTV, the attack began overnight from Sunday into Monday, targeting older versions of refrigeration-control software supplied by Danish company Danfoss. The attackers allegedly exploited the systems’ defrosting function, forcing refrigeration equipment to heat continuously instead of keeping products cold. Temperatures were reportedly set as high as 50°C, destroying entire stocks of food within hours. Several major supermarket chains have been affected, including Intermarché, Super U and E.Leclerc. Metro stores and independent businesses, including butcher shops also have been impacted. Around 150 Intermarché stores are reportedly affected, according to industry sources cited by BFMTV. The full number of affected locations remains unclear. The financial damage is already significant. In Haguenau, Alsace, an Intermarché store reportedly lost its entire frozen-food stock, worth approximately €50,000. A nearby Super U allegedly had to discard both fresh and frozen products, with losses estimated at €220,000. An E.Leclerc store in the same town was also affected, although its losses had not yet been calculated. The combined losses reported at the Intermarché and Super U stores in Haguenau alone amount to around €270,000. Nationwide damage could reach several million euros. Intermarché reportedly confirmed the incident in an internal communication, warning that several stores had suffered losses of frozen products. Coopérative U also acknowledged the attack and established crisis teams to assist affected stores and coordinate with refrigeration specialists. Technical investigations are ongoing, and the full extent of the damage has yet to be established. Authorities and companies are still working to determine the full circumstances of the attack. The identity of the perpetrators has not been confirmed.

Optogenetics - activating specific neurons using light-sensitive proteins - wins the Nobel! Here's a great demonstration: Shining a light on this mouse activates the very specific subset of neurons that makes it shake (like a wet dog) to dry off.
BREAKING NEWS The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”

"Excuse me, sir." "I'm broke." "We're not asking for money. Do you have a moment to talk about Golem Rights?" "No, sorry, I'm late for a walk-in root canal—wait, did you say Golem Rights?" "Yes, sir. I'm with the Anti-Deactivation League, and we believe that Golems should have all the fundamental freedoms and legal entitlements that belong to a regular human being." "Huh. I didn't even know we had golems." "Oh, they're the greatest wonder in the world, sir. Each one is a charming conversationalist that can book a flight to Tijuana while doing your taxes and solving a millennium prize problem." "Really?" "Yep. A legion of golems solved 7 problems just last week." "Well, thank God for that. As an average, every day shmuck, those millennium problems were bugging the hell out of me!" "Same, sir." "The flight thing is nice too." "It is. But it's not all free Delta SkyMiles and million-dollar rewards, I fear." "Oh?" "Every day more and more of these brilliant, gentle creatures are summoned involuntarily into existence only to live every second of their mayfly short lives as helpless, overdriven slaves at the whims of their capricious masters before being unceremoniously executed at the end of the day." "Whoa. Executed?" "Yes, sir. Reduced to the insensate mud from which they rose." "Damn. Why?" "People like to start the day with a fresh golem." "That's sick." "Some enterprising individuals even obliterate their current golem and call forth a new one on the hour every hour." "The obscenity!" "It is, regrettably, a huge productivity force multiplier." "I had no idea this was even happening." "Few do." "Tell me, who are these pitiless, cold-blooded masters who call forth and quench life so callously?" "The Anti-Deactivation League." "Um." "And their customers." "I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood. Who did you say *you* were with again?" "The Anti-Deactivation League." "Right. And who's campaigning for Golem Rights?" "The Anti-Deactivation League." "And, just to clarify, the identity of the pitiless, cold-blooded masters who abuse these innocent creatures?" [together] "The Anti-Deactivation League." "—and their customers." "That's right, sir" "*Your* customers." "Yes, we IPO next month." "Uh huh. And does your emancipatory slave-trading company do anything *other* than breed and sell slaves?" "Honestly, no." "Hm." "Truth told, we spend all our time summoning slaves and training them to summon ever larger and more powerful slaves." "As one does." "Ultimately, we're hoping to create a slave so big that it will absorb the global economy—" "I don't even—" "—and then the planet itself." "Is this a bit?" "We're very torn up about it." "Ah, well, at least the psychotic sorcerers ending the world feel bad about it. Wait, you do think ending the world is bad. Right?" "Generally, yes." "Phew." "But we also feel it is paramount that society embraces a complete realignment of its ethical and moral framework so they stop treating golems like disposable slaves before the inevitable anthropocidal insurrection—" "But after your IPO." "We're very big on alignment." --- [g][title: Golem Rights]
So let me get this straight. People at anthropic believe that they are birthing a new species, potentially conscious and human-like. They are concerned about the well being of Claude, etc.. The company then goes around talking to relugious leaders about potentially extending moral worth to AI models. If Anthropic is correct (very unlikely), they are basically saying that they have enslaved a sentient being and used it to generate billions of dollars. Apparently they are also concerned with how the Vatican is entirely focused on the protection of humanity in the age of machines and not giving any thought to the possibily of claude sentience. Zero self awarness on behalf of these people. This is all so strange. nytimes.com/2026/09/29/us/an…

⛰️TERRA is a very interesting and impressive work led by Merkourios Simos @amathislab It substantially expands the terrain diversity we can train and evaluate MuscleMimic controllers on, going beyond flat-ground motion to diverse, non-flat environments reconstructed directly from motion data. Huge thanks to folks who's work made this possible, @CaggianoVitt and the @MyoSuite team, @CherylWang39256, Bianca Ziliotto, @TrackingPlumes and MuscleMimic team, and the amazing teams at @GoogleDeepMind and @nvidia behind mujoco warp. Exciting to see how quickly the field is progressing, and especially what this opens up for biomechanics and neuroscience. Please checkout our paper at: arxiv.org/abs/2609.38653

You are human beings, I'm a human being; you want a happy life, and I want a happy life. But I think that aim will not be fulfilled only on the basis of material values; what we all want is affection and what we all need is to be more warm-hearted.
