Watch carefully. Box out but lowers the hip right at the knee. At this point she (Gabby) can't protect herself. Is this intentional? Don't know but what I do know that they couldn't stop her and the refs have to stop and review that for player safety. I do not know Canada's intentions (😉) but it also doesn't look like a natural box out.

100% on purpose. No reason to do that at all if you're not in front of the opponent unless you are trying to hurt them. Would've tossed lard butt.

That's not a normal box out. SMH. The refs didn't even blink twice at it and the announcers excused it.

Also egregious lane violation. the blind side defender cannot cross the three point line until the ball hits the rim - she is super early here and boxes out from the side and initiates contact while Williams was still in mid air shooting her shot. That's why it's so dangerous - Williams had no idea she was there.

bro, if the men did what the WNBA players do every night, there would be riots refs are not calling hits to the face and to the knees and players now go for them with impunity... they know they are not going to get called look at what happens when you go for a layup in traffic a hit to the head is coming, 100% of the times... is it called? fuck no...

Yes. It was 100% intentional. You are the ONLY other person I see talking about this. Broadcasters gaslit it as a "box out" and refs completely ignored an intentional Flagrant 2 that is as dangerous as a "no landing space" foul. Canada is straight up dirty for this. When watched in slo-mo, Gabby was VERY lucky. Hope she is 100% after the treatments...

Atlanta has been one of the dirtiest teams all year.

Having watched the play on the court for some time, women are untrained in the fundamentals of basketball in WNBA. Boxing out, setting screens, establishing position, charging (no credit card needed), would result in fouls 90% of the time if the referees knew the game. Pathetic.

Why is nobody talked about the abysmal quality of play? The skill level is pathetic.

She came from the rear of Gabby to “box out”because she couldn’t come from the side or it would have been a FT violation. Secondly, she hit the side of Gabby’s knee with her hip while Gabby was in a vulnerable position while shooting a FT. Refs have to protect the player.

The more I see this replay the more my blood boils. @WNBA if Gabby's not fully fit after tonight, there will be blood on your hands. This is a flagrant 2.

Dirty play just like Angel against the Liberty! Sophie showed exactly what ATL was doing & trying to take out the "knee" on her podcast. Smh

intentional ball already in the hoop. plus she is scumbag.
3
The brick is a menace to wnba players.

You would think a vet would not make such a mistake
13
The play is illegal from the start. Canada has to be behind the 3pt line when the ball hits the rim. It’s literally protection so she can’t blindside the shooter.
27
more examples of the trash refs of the wnba making their trash non calls. Not even worth looking at.

These players also throw more elbows than Gordie Howe. It’s all intentional.
4
Intentional or not it should have been reviewed.

Canada did that on purpose. Dream getting beat, locked up on offense, couldn’t handle it. That play pissed me off as a sports fan. Gabby was clutch all in their face, they were salty/did dirty stuff non stop. Made me sad when Gabby was legit crying but stayed in and played on 🫡

Canada is a total POS player and needs to be thrown out of the league for this one play. You legally can't even move at this time based on the rules, yet this girl, Canada dives at Gabby's knee. WTF, review and throw her out of the league.
25
It's intentional.

I’ve never seen a box out on shooter from top of the key. Clearly a move to cause pain.
5
Intentional for sure

She came at her from behind, it's not a "box out", it's an intentional cheap shot. Pathetic league will do nothing about it.
26
Thats what they do to all the player they cant stop.

Boxing out the free throw shooter? When is that ever done? Plus, she was in a lane violation, the ball hadn't hit the rim. It was intentional... The coach needs to be questioned.
7
No one can step into the lane until the ball hits the rim area.. same is true for the circle. Lane violation .. flagrant 2

This flies in the face of WNBA’s statement about creating a safe place for their players.
21
100% intentional to go for the side of the knee and not the thigh. These women are athletes. Athletes know where their body is in space and in relation to other players all the time. She intentionally tried to injure that knee.
22
The ball isn’t even there. She’s attacking the player who threw the FT seconds before. How is this not punished by the rules?
29
Idk if it’s intentional but I’ve never seen a defender box out the free throw shooter while the ball is still in the air. This is the definition of the shooter being defenseless, she’s still following through on her shot when she’s hit…
10
Hopefully it isn’t a serious knee injury. What are the referees doing?
26
It’s a bullshit play and if that happen on the NBA there’d be a fight, fine and suspension

Dang these girls boxing out legs anything they can get in contact with besides the body
